Ranotenie is a 46-year-old married woman from Tanandava, in Androy, southern Madagascar, who has 12 children. Together with her husband she farms fields that used to belong to her father. Some of her children have migrated for work. \u201c\u2026I their mother, don\u2019t want to release them, but there\u2019s no work in this land of ours\u2026\u201d, she explains.<\/p>\n

The land has become unproductive because of frequent drought. In the past, Ranotenie says, they had \u201csarete (ox-cart)loadsof harvest\u201d whereas now \u201ceverything is lost that\u2019s planted\u2026 if the rains are good some will produce, but without rain they die and are cattle feed\u201d. In addition, they have little land left, having had to sell two fields recently to pay for burial expenses when close family members died.<\/p>\n

Ranotenie is also a \u201cbird raiser\u2019\u2019, which enables her to buy essential household items. She explains: \u201c\u2026I sold chickens and I sold turkeys, and Rangahe [her husband] then bought a barrel [for fetching water]\u2026 Chickens and turkeys got this thing for me\u2026\u201d She and her husband also own two cows, a pulling team, which is crucial for their livelihood. Though prepared to sell poultry in times of need Ranotenie insists they should not sell their cattle, and opposes her husband on this issue. \u201cRangahe will say, \u2018Sell that cow!\u2019 But I won\u2019t release it. [She replies,] \u2018What are we going to do, Rangahe, if we always just sell off our possessions?…\u2019 In the end, it\u2019s here, because I held fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ranotenie does not consider herself amongst the truly poor, such as widows or those with no possessions. Yet food has been so desperately short that she recently asked some Catholic nuns to feed and care for her youngest children for a while. \u201cIt was only Zesosy (Jesus) who kept those kids alive\u2026,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

She feels it is time to complain to \u201cthose big people, the leaders\u201d and call on them for assistance: \u201cWe here are hard hit, we here are starving,\u201d she says. \u201cBegin to agitate your leaders, for we\u2019re dying of ker\u00e8 (drought, starvation) now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Ranotenie is fearful that \u201cthe day will come when these hands are weak and can\u2019t plant, and I\u2019ll have to beg\u201d. \u201c\u2026We can\u2019t continue like this forever,\u201d she says. Her hopes lie with her children: \u201cSo what I\u2019d really hope for is that they\u2019d have employment, that they could support me\u2026 That they could maintain me, [by getting] a job as a teacher or as a rasaze (midwife), that\u2019s the thirst of my soul\u2026\u201d This is the main reason she \u201cput them in school\u201d, she says, though she also stresses the importance of education and literacy in enabling people to participate in community development associations.<\/p>\n

She has also been anticipating remittances from her oldest children working elsewhere. \u201cThose children of mine should…send me some money [so] that I could purchase some things,\u201d she says. \u201cBut…those young women, those men, since they left, have not sent me so much as rai\u2019ale (10,000 ariary note \u2013 5 US$1).\u201d<\/p>\n

Ranotenie\u2019s immediate hope is that \u201cthe rains would fall\u201d and she will be free of anxiety: \u201cYes [if] the rains come, I [will] plant and all those evil thoughts in my heart [will] vanish. Then I [will] plant and get something from that, get a harvest, get some chickens, and if the harvest is plentiful, I\u2019ll be able to have sheep, have goats, then those being with me I\u2019d raise them.\u201d<\/p>\n
