The National Lottery Authority in the Eastern region, together with the police, has rounded up 32 people at Nkawkaw, Akim Oda, Akuapem-Akropong, Asesewa and Koforidua, all in the region, for operating illegal lottery.<\/p>\n
The arrested people have consequently been arraigned before a Koforidua circuit court presided over by Wilhemina Hammond and granted bail on charges of operating illegal lottery contrary to Act 722 of 2006.<\/p>\n
Briefing Daily Guide about the arrest, the regional manager of the NLA, Emmanuel Hatsu said the Authority took the step to stem the tide of illegal lottery operation in the region.<\/p>\n
According to him, it was against the laws of the country to operate \u2018banker to banker\u2019 since these \u2018banker to banker\u2019 operators did not pay any tax to the government.<\/p>\n
He said the NLA had given the opportunity to all \u2018banker to banker\u2019 operators to be agents of the Authority by registering with the Authority and be given the lottery machines free of charge.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are determined to ensure that the government does not lose any revenue through illegal lottery and that we have even stopped all the mobile phone communication companies which have been operating these lotteries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said now, the operations of the NLA had been diversified and that agents were able to buy credit from financial institutions like Ghana Commercial Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, National Investment Bank and Zenith Bank while at the same time winners of NLA could claim their wins from the same banks.<\/p>\n
He said the NLA in the Eastern region would continue to carry out swoops on illegal lottery operators to allow the Authority get the necessary revenue for the country and for the development of the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
