Many sportsmen swear by avoiding sex before a big event to keep their strength for the battle ahead.<\/p>\n

Not Andy Murray. The British tennis player says he plays so often that abstaining before matches would means he was always saying no.<\/p>\n

In contrast to the likes of Muhammad Ali, who is said to have abstained for six weeks before each fight, Murray admitted: \u2018I\u2019m not one of those sportsmen who practises a strict policy of sexual abstinence before playing.\u2019<\/p>\n

Murray, 23, whose relationship with girlfriend Kim Sears goes back six years, told Spain\u2019s El Mundo newspaper: \u2018Tennis is not like boxing.<\/p>\n

\u2018I remember a former world\u00a0 heavyweight whose trainer banned him from having sex six weeks before a fight. We play every week, so with a boxer\u2019s mentality we\u2019d always be saying \u201cno\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n

Murray competed in 19 tournaments last year, involving 75 matches.<\/p>\n

He is currently in Barcelona training for the Madrid Open.<\/p>\n

At least the world No 4 is free to make his own decisions, unlike the German football team who were banned by then manager Berti Vogts from having sex before games at the 1994 World Cup.<\/p>\n

In contrast at the last World Cup in South Africa, the Argentinian and Brazilian teams were actually encouraged to spend time with their partners.<\/p>\n

But Fabio Capello\u2019s England team were given strict instructions that they could only see their significant others after each match.<\/p>\n

Legendary footballer George Best, however, had no problem bedding women the night before big games.<\/p>\n

Advice he gave in 2004 was: \u2018I certainly never found it had any effect on my performance.<\/p>\n

\u2018Maybe best not the hour before, but the night before makes no odds.\u2019<\/p>\n

In athletics 100m champion Linford Christie said sex before a big race made his legs feel like lead.<\/p>\n

More recently World Heavyweight champion David Hayes revealed he follows Ali\u2019s strict ‘no sex for six weeks’ rule.<\/p>\n

Prior to his fight against Audley Harrison he said: \u2018I think a man is at his most dangerous when he hasn\u2019t had sex for six weeks.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019ve been doing that for many years and the one time I didn\u2019t follow that rule, I lost.\u2019<\/p>\n

But scientists disagree, with no evidence to support the notion that sex before a sporting event leaves athletes spent.<\/p>\n

In 2000 a report titled \u2018Does Sex the Night Before Competition Decrease Performance?\u2019 the practice was called a \u2018long-standing myth\u2019 that \u2018may stem from the theory that sexual frustration leads to increased aggression.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ian Shrier, a sports medicine specialist who wrote the report, said at the time: \u2018There are two possible ways sex before competition could affect performance.<\/p>\n

\u2018First, it could make you tired and weak the next day, but this has been disproved.<\/p>\n

\u2018The second way is that it could affect your psychological state of mind. This has not been tested.\u2019<\/p>\n

Professor Emmanuele Jannini, who has studied the effects of abstinence on athletic performance, has even suggested sex before a big game can be beneficial.<\/p>\n

He said that sex increases the production of testosterone, which increases aggression.<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018After three months without sex, which is not so uncommon for some athletes, testosterone dramatically drops to levels close to children\u2019s levels.\u2019<\/p>\n
