Long queues were yesterday observed at most filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory over fears of fuel scarcity, while black marketers made brisk businesses close to the stations.<\/p>\n
The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation has however denied any plans to hike fuel prices and called the scarcity artificial.<\/p>\n
Our reporters who monitored the situation observed scores of motorists in endless queues at various filling stations within the FCT.<\/p>\n
The queues were experienced at most filling stations at Mararaba, Nyanya, Karu, Kuje, Abaji and also stations opposite the NNPC Towers in Abuja\u2019s Central Business Area.<\/p>\n
A motorist at Asama Filling Station Mararaba told City News that he came to the station at 6 am and could not get any as at 10 am.<\/p>\n
A black marketer, Mrs Favour, lamented that the scarcity has turned fuel attendants into mini gods.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey charge us N300 extra for each 25 litres gallon of fuel we buy from their stations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Mr. Vulegbo, a resident of Kuje town, said he suspected foul play when the scarcity occurred during the election period, after fuel supplies have been stable for nearly a year.<\/p>\n
At Abaji, our reporters observed attendants selling fuel at N80 per litre in a filling station.<\/p>\n
Our reporters, who visited the petrol station, saw people scrambling to buy fuel in jerry cans.<\/p>\n
A motorist said he was at the station for over three hours but did not succeed as attendants concentrated more on customers with jerry cans.<\/p>\n
A pump attendant at the station said they increased their pump prices because of the crowd.<\/p>\n
Scarcity was also observed at Kwali and Gwagwalada metropolis of the councils, as many filling stations, including independent ones had no fuel, except Jibeco Filling Station, where long queue were seen.<\/p>\n
However, some petrol black marketers within both metropolis of the councils made brisk businesses as they sold a four litre gallon of fuel for between N800 to N900, while 20 litres sold at N6,000 instead of N5,000.<\/p>\n
