{"id":415576,"date":"2011-05-02T17:26:07","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T17:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/02\/stocks-lose-traction-as-attention-shifts\/"},"modified":"2011-05-02T17:26:07","modified_gmt":"2011-05-02T17:26:07","slug":"stocks-lose-traction-as-attention-shifts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/02\/stocks-lose-traction-as-attention-shifts\/","title":{"rendered":"Stocks lose traction as attention shifts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"127.327006247\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/markets\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/3f58faf4dex_dow.top_.png.png\" alt=\"1245chart_ws_index_dow.top.png\" width=\"475\" height=\"280\" border=\"0\" class=\"cnnstoryImageFull\" \/><\/a><span><strong>Click the chart for more market data.<\/strong><\/span><span id=\"fb-recommend\"\/> <span>By Ken Sweet, contributing writer<\/span><span>May 2, 2011: 1:25 PM ET<\/span><\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK\u00a0(CNNMoney) &#8212; U.S. stocks lost momentum Monday as investors shifted focus back to the economy and earnings news.<\/p>\n<p>The news that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/WORLD\/asiapcf\/05\/02\/bin.laden.dead\/index.html\">Osama bin Laden had been killed<\/a> by U.S. forces gave stocks an early boost, but it will take more to sustain a longer rally, say traders.<\/p>\n<p>The Dow Jones industrial average (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=INDU&#038;source=story_quote_link\">INDU<\/a>) was down 2 points, or less than 0.1%; the S&#038;P 500 (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=SPX&#038;source=story_quote_link\">SPX<\/a>) fell 2 points, or 0.1%; and the Nasdaq Composite (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=COMP&#038;source=story_quote_link\">COMP<\/a>) was down 9 points, or 0.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Bin Laden&#8217;s death won&#8217;t change the economic or corporate landscape in the United States. &#8220;Once the bin Laden news settles and earnings season slows down, we&#8217;ll be due for a pullback,&#8221; said Fred Dickson, chief market strategist with D.A. Davidson &#038; Co.<\/p>\n<p>Alcoa (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=AA&#038;source=story_quote_link\">AA<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/15.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>), Merck (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=MRK&#038;source=story_quote_link\">MRK<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/280.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) and American Express (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=AXP&#038;source=story_quote_link\">AXP<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/2493.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) led the blue chips higher Monday, but shares of Microsoft (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=MSFT&#038;source=story_quote_link\">MSFT<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/3063.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) offset the gains and weighed down the tech sector. Applied Materials (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=AMAT&#038;source=story_quote_link\">AMAT<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/992.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) and Whole Foods (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=WFMI&#038;source=story_quote_link\">WFMI<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/10572.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) were the Nasdaq&#8217;s biggest laggards.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/04\/29\/markets\/markets_newyork\/index.htm\">stocks finished their best month this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stocks have headed higher since the beginning of the year amid strong earnings. Despite jitters about the economy and concerns about inflation, April was the best month for the three indexes since December.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate earnings have largely come in above expectations but last week&#8217;s weak <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/04\/28\/news\/economy\/1q_gdp_report\/index.htm\">GDP reading<\/a> and higher-than-forecast <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/04\/28\/news\/economy\/initial_claims\/index.htm\">jobless claims<\/a> show there&#8217;s still cause for concern about the U.S. economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/commodities\/index.html\">Commodities<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/currencies\/index.html\">currencies<\/a><\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/05\/02\/markets\/oil_prices\/index.htm\">Oil prices<\/a> were slightly lower, with June oil futures falling 47 cents to $113.52 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oil can be a globally emotional, reactive market and any time that geopolitical risk is reduced there is less fear in the oil markets,&#8221; said Derek Hoffman, chief executive and founder of Wall St. Cheat Sheet. &#8220;The news that there was a successful effort to find, capture and kill the number one terrorist in the world is a positive sign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gold prices also backed off their highs Monday. Gold futures for June delivery were up $5 to $1,561.20 an ounce, after hitting an intraday high of $1,577.40 an ounce. Meanwhile, silver prices remained under pressure, falling 3.7% to $46.82 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>In currencies, the dollar fell against the euro, but gained strength against the Japanese yen and the British pound.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/bonds\/index.html\"><strong>Bonds<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> The price on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury edged higher, pushing the yield down to 3.29%.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s shaping up to be a big week for bonds, with the Treasury Department expected to announce details of its quarterly refunding on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/data\/world_markets\/europe\/\"><strong>World markets:<\/strong><\/a> Markets around the world had a muted reaction to Osama bin Laden&#8217;s death, with Britain&#8217;s FTSE 100, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong and the Shanghai Composite all closed for holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Other European markets rose slightly. The DAX in Germany rose 0.3% and France&#8217;s CAC 40 closed up 0.1%.<\/p>\n<p>And Japan&#8217;s Nikkei ended the session 1.6% higher.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/economy\/index.html\"><strong>Economy:<\/strong><\/a> The Institute for Supply Management said its April manufacturing index fell to a reading of 60.4%, better than the reading of 58.5% economists had expected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/companies\/\"><strong>Companies<\/strong><\/a>: The <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/04\/05\/markets\/apple_nasdaq_rebalance\/index.htm\">Nasdaq-100 index will be rebalanced<\/a> to reduce the weight of Apple&#8217;s stock by about 40%. Apple (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=AAPL&#038;source=story_quote_link\">AAPL<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/670.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) currently represents 20.5% of the index. After the rebalancing, Apple&#8217;s weight will be reduced to 12.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of TiVo (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=TIVO&#038;source=story_quote_link\">TIVO<\/a>) were up 5% after DISH Network Corporation (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=DISH&#038;source=story_quote_link\">DISH<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune500\/2010\/snapshots\/10834.html?source=story_f500_link\">Fortune 500<\/a>) and EchoStar Corporation (<a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=SATS&#038;source=story_quote_link\">SATS<\/a>) announced they will pay <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/05\/02\/technology\/tivo_dish_echostar_settlement\/index.htm\">TiVo $500 million<\/a> to settle an ongoing patent dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, DISH reported earnings per share of $1.22 for the quarter ended in March, easily topping forecasts. Also, DISH said it gained approximately 58,000 net subscribers during the quarter.
