{"id":414657,"date":"2011-05-02T11:21:26","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T11:21:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/02\/nlc-lauds-jonathan-for-taking-%e2%80%9ccalculated-risk%e2%80%9d\/"},"modified":"2011-05-02T11:21:26","modified_gmt":"2011-05-02T11:21:26","slug":"nlc-lauds-jonathan-for-taking-calculated-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/02\/nlc-lauds-jonathan-for-taking-calculated-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"NLC lauds Jonathan for taking \u201ccalculated risk\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"89\">\n<p>Abuja \u2013 The NLC has commended President Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s courage in sustaining INEC\u2019s independence during the just-concluded April general elections.<\/p>\n<p>NLC President Abdulwaheed Omar gave the commendation during May Day celebration in Abuja on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the conduct of the elections has shown that it is possible to have credible elections in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was made possible by the commitment, courage and integrity of the new INEC team,\u00a0 led by Prof. Attahiru Jega.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that in spite of all odds, the INEC chairman lived up to the expectations of Nigerians and the international community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe commend Mr President for not only choosing the right person to do the job but also ensuring that the independence of the electoral body is sustained at all times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a political environment where politicians crave to win at all cost, this gesture is remarkable as never\u00a0 in the history of our country has an incumbent President taken such calculated risk to put himself and the fortune of his party at the polls in the hands of a neutral and independent electoral body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is even the more amazing as the rigging of election and do-or-die politics have come to be synonymous with the ruling party of which he was a presidential candidate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Omar called for the consolidation of the outstanding feat by INEC and the passion shown by the electorate for democracy during the just- concluded elections.<\/p>\n<p>He condemned the post-election crises in some parts of the country, saying the killing and maiming of fellow Nigerians were \u201cunfortunate and totally misplaced\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe strongly condemn this misguided violence, our laws are clear on seeking redress on perceived or real grievances in elections,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He commended those who defied the rains, sun and security threats\u00a0 to queue patiently to be registered, on election days spent hours to be accredited, and after voting waited for the votes to be counted.<\/p>\n<p>He said the message in the resolve and commitment of the people was clear \u2013 never again should the Nigerian people accept manipulated elections.<\/p>\n<p>On the economy, Omar frowned at the situation whereby about 10 per cent of the population would cornered more than 30 per cent\u00a0 of the nation\u2019s wealth through looting of public treasury, excessive remuneration for public office-holders\u00a0 and dubious businesses.
