MIAMI (AP)\u2014Paul Pierce<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> got hit\u2014and then run.<\/p>\n

Boston\u2019s captain was ejected with 7 minutes left in Game 1 of the Celtics\u2019 Eastern Conference semifinal series on Sunday afternoon after picking up two technical fouls on separate plays in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

The ejection came after a play where he set a screen for Ray Allen<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> against Miami\u2019s Dwyane Wade<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> who was running at him with a good amount of speed. Both players appeared to take offense to the force of the collision, Wade stepping toward Pierce after the play as the Boston forward was saying something to him.<\/p>\n

Referee Ed Malloy called a double-technical\u2014and in Pierce\u2019s case, it was his second, meaning his night was over.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s what we call a verbal taunt,\u201d crew chief Dan Crawford said. \u201cHe directed profanity towards Wade. And in the rulebook, that is a verbal taunt. And it just so happened to be Pierce\u2019s second technical foul.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miami won the game, 99-90. Game 2 is Tuesday. Pierce did not speak with reporters after the game.<\/p>\n

Pierce\u2019s first technical came after he was fouled by James Jones<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> on the right wing, a play where Jones made some contact with Pierce\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

He took exception with that, as did Celtics coach Doc Rivers afterward.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames Jones was a clear flagrant,\u201d Rivers said. \u201cHe went right for the head and grabbed. And I thought Dwyane Wade\u2019s was an absolute flagrant. He had no intentions \u2026 he was just trying to run through Paul. I told Paul, \u2018You still don\u2019t react.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n

The game was aired by ABC, and analysts Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy both thought Pierce\u2019s ejection was not warranted.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t toss him out,\u201d Jackson said on air.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think that he could have said anything that would warrant being thrown out of this game,\u201d Van Gundy said. \u201cWhat does it matter? No one hears it. He\u2019s talking to Dwyane Wade. You\u2019re ruining the end of this game over something that doesn\u2019t need to be addressed like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first technical foul was because Pierce made contact with Jones during a dead-ball period. Pierce\u2019s head made light contact with Jones during that skirmish, but Crawford said it stopped short of being called a head-butt, which may have merited further sanctioning from the NBA.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe approached Jones and got right in his face,\u201d Crawford said.<\/p>\n

In the Celtics\u2019 locker room, the sense was that their captain was wronged.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf anything, you let it go,\u201d forward Kevin Garnett<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> said. \u201cThe play was called, the foul, whatever was called, it wasn\u2019t something that escalated or felt like that needed to be blown out of proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reserve forward Glen Davis<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> was more succinct.<\/p>\n

\u201cA dirty shot,\u201d Davis said, adding, \u201cWe\u2019re awake. Most definitely we smell what\u2019s going on, the coffee is brewing. We\u2019ll be back Game 2 and it\u2019ll be a great game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pierce finished with 19 points and seven rebounds on 6 of 14 shooting. It was the second playoff ejection of his career, the other coming against the Indiana Pacers<\/a> in 2005.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
