Although we found it belated, we could only take solace in the dictum \u201cbetter-late-than-never\u201d when the Judicial Council finally reacted to the veiled threats to the judiciary by a group of Andani youth when it submitted a petition to the Chief Justice.<\/p>\n
It was another sordid statement on the state of governance in the country and we deplore it in no uncertain terms.<\/p>\n
Regrettable as it was, it showed just how far we have retrogressed as a nation, to the stage we were when high court judges were abducted and murdered during curfew hours.<\/p>\n
The silence of the Judicial Council when the Andani youth descended on the judiciary prompted questions about whether this group of legal luminaries which supports the Chief Justice in the performance of his\/her work, was going to react at all.<\/p>\n
When it eventually did, the response was a magnum opus of a reaction, educative to the uninitiated in the workings of the judiciary, and damaging to partisan lawyers who have thrown caution to the wind and engaged in the subtle destruction of the integrity of the bench.<\/p>\n
Although there is no way this paltry number of lawyers can achieve their political objective, it is doubtful if they are ready to pull the brakes on their diabolic enterprise, given the favours they seek to attract.<\/p>\n
The effrontery shown by the group from Dagbon, through the threat of returning, perhaps with a vengeance, goes against the promise of the President to support an independent judiciary. It threatened the judiciary and went scot free in a 2011 Ghana.<\/p>\n
It is worth recalling how on the day of the demonstration, which showed all the trappings of state sponsorship, judges had to abandon their work, fearing what could befall them.<\/p>\n
We commented on the development and lamented how in this day and age judges could still be apprehensive of a demonstrating group of youth.<\/p>\n
With this development recorded in the annals of the judiciary, and therefore democracy in the country, one can safely conclude that good governance had been dealt a devastating blow.<\/p>\n
Happening in a regime of the NDC, an offshoot of the PNDC, the junta under which the murder of three high court judges took place, the judges were justified in taking cover since they could not gamble with their lives.<\/p>\n
It is worth recalling the high international regards the judgments of our judges have attracted. Yet partisan elements seek to give them a bad name so that they can conveniently hang them.<\/p>\n
If there is one arm of government which should be spared the pigeon-holing of its membership, it is the judiciary which has suffered maltreatment from state players.<\/p>\n
As the principal bastion of our democracy and therefore our freedoms, all Ghanaians who cherish the enjoyment of these attributes of good governance should stand up and be counted as regards which side they stand- with \u201ccat hunters\u201d or democracy defenders.
As for us, we are on the side of the latter.<\/p>\n
