{"id":413456,"date":"2011-05-01T23:01:09","date_gmt":"2011-05-01T23:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/01\/idps-settle-on-disputed-land-after-talks-with-local-people\/"},"modified":"2011-05-01T23:01:09","modified_gmt":"2011-05-01T23:01:09","slug":"idps-settle-on-disputed-land-after-talks-with-local-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/01\/idps-settle-on-disputed-land-after-talks-with-local-people\/","title":{"rendered":"IDPs Settle on Disputed Land After Talks With Local People"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"70.3085023401\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/450a559cnation180.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"The Nation (Nairobi)\" title=\"Visit The Nation (Nairobi)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Samuel Karanja and Bernard Kwalia<\/p>\n<p>1 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Nairobi \u2014 The more than 200 internally displaced families taken to Trans Nzoia from Rongai have been resettled, Special Programmes Minister Esther Murugi has said.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said the IDPs were settled on the controversial land bought by the government after negotiations with the local community who had previously refused to accommodate them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 255 families in Endebess have now been settled after we talked with the local community and advised them not to listen to politicians who want to divide them,&#8221; said Ms Murugi.<\/p>\n<p>The local community had become hostile towards the IDPs and demanded that squatters in the area be settled first.<\/p>\n<p>The situation was made worse after area MP Noah Wekesa claimed that he had not been consulted before the families were moved there.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Murugi also defended the move by the government to resettle IDPs in new lands. She said the IDPs had been traumatised and were not willing to go back to their former homes.<\/p>\n<p>She said her ministry would complete resettlement of IDPs by September adding that more than 9,000 acres had been identified in Rift Valley and Central to settle the remaining victims of violence.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Murugi said land in Narok that had previously been meant for IDPs will now be used for research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will sell the land to KARI (Kenya Agriculture Research Institute) and the money will be used to buy land to resettle the displaced families in other places,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Narok land was abandoned by IDPs when they met similar hostility from the local community.<\/p>\n<p>The minister was speaking in Nyeri during a women&#8217;s sports day where she presented trophies to winners at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In Trans-Nzoia County, it was tears of joy as the families were dropped at Molem and Kirita farms in Kwanza constituency.<\/p>\n<p>The host communities were at hand to welcome them as local leaders shunned the exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Wekesa, the Forestry and Wildlife minister, the chairman of Nzoia county council Mr Samson Bunyasi, Kitale Mayor Charles Bonyo and other civic leaders skipped the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The IDPs, who arrived last week from Rongai, in Nakuru, had initially been rejected by the host communities and some leaders who insisted the landless from the area should have been given priority in the resettlement plan.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that some leaders who had taken a tough stand against the IDPs negotiated with the government to have some squatters accommodated in the resettlement plan.<\/p>\n<p>Rift Valley Provincial Commissioner Osman Warfa and North Rift Regional Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga mobilised and coordinated security agencies to ensure the IDPs smoothly settled in their new homes.<\/p>\n<p>A combined force of Regular, APs, GSU and the military escorted the IDPs who boarded lorries and buses from Soil Conservation Primary school near Kitale to the farms.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Warfa kicked off the exercise that started at 5am on Saturday despite warnings from a cross section of local leaders that they would block the resettlement.<\/p>\n<p>The Kitale-Endebess road was tightly secured by security officers to thwart any attempt by residents to block the IDPs from accessing the farms.<\/p>\n<p>Kwanza senior district officer Banuel Nyagaka and Kitale police station boss Bonaya Galgalo escorted 37 families to 90 acres at Kapomboi, near the troubled Kwanza-West Pokot border.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Excerpt from:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201105010042.html\" title=\"IDPs Settle on Disputed Land After Talks With Local People\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IDPs Settle on Disputed Land After Talks With Local People<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Samuel Karanja and Bernard Kwalia 1 May 2011 Nairobi \u2014 The more than 200 internally displaced families taken to Trans Nzoia from Rongai have been resettled, Special Programmes Minister Esther Murugi has said.
