EastEnders is set to lose two of its most popular characters – both old and new – later this year.<\/p>\n

Charlie G Hawkins, who has played cheeky chappie Darren Miller for nearly seven years, and relative newcomer Zoe Lucker (Vanessa Gold) have announced plans to quit the soap.<\/p>\n

The pair, who share many scenes together due to Darren’s romance with Vanessa’s daughter Jodie (Kylie Babbington), are both set to be written out later this year.<\/p>\n

Hawkins, who has grown up on-screen since joining the cast of the BBC soap when he was just 13, said he wanted to experience life as a ‘normal 20-year-old’.<\/p>\n

But despite his yearning for a normal life, he said he hopes producers will leave the door open for a potential return.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, former Footballers’ Wives star Lucker, 37, was never meant to be a permanent addition to the cast.<\/p>\n

She joined initially in June last year on a short contract but was persuaded to stay longer when she proved popular with viewers.<\/p>\n

There’ll be fireworks: Vanessa’s departure will end her rocky romance with Max Branning (Jake Wood)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But her high-maintenance businesswoman character is set to depart Albert Square in an ‘explosive’ exit.<\/p>\n

A BBC spokesperson told Digital Spy: ‘Z\u00f6e was brought into ‘EastEnders’ for a storyline playing Max’s love interest and will go out with a bang.<\/p>\n

‘Z\u00f6e has done a fabulous job of bringing the character of Vanessa to life and the door has been left wide open for her return.’<\/p>\n

During his nearly seven years on the soap, Hawkins was involved in one of the soap’s biggest storylines in recent years when Darren fathered Heather Trott’s baby son George Michael.<\/p>\n

The discovery of the baby’s paternity after his birth came as a shock to Darren’s fianc\u00e9e Libby Fox.<\/p>\n

\"Growing<\/p>\n

Growing up on-screen: Hawkins joined the cast in late 2004 alongside on-screen family Mickey (Joe Swash) and Demi (Shana Swash)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He initially was introduced as a member of the Miller clan – which comprised of Mickey (Joe Swash), Dawn Swann (Kara Tointon) and Demi (Shana Swash) and their parents Rosie (Gerry Cowper) and Keith (David Spinx).<\/p>\n

Although the rest of Darren’s family have left Walford behind, the young man got a job at the car lot and started living with mechanic Minty.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the actor said: ‘I’ve enjoyed my time at EastEnders immensely, it’s been a terrific chapter in my life and I’ve loved every minute of it.<\/p>\n

‘I’ve had tremendous support throughout my duration on the show and I would like to thank Bryan Kirkwood (executive producer) and the whole team for believing in me.’<\/p>\n

Despite her boyfriend Darren and mother Vanessa’s exit from Walford, the character of Jodie is expected to remain in the Square.<\/p>\n
