MIAMI (AP)\u2014Udonis Haslem<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> was on the court three hours before tipoff Sunday, putting himself through a workout with hopes of getting into the Miami Heat<\/a> lineup. Shaquille O\u2019Neal<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> walked around the Boston Celtics<\/a> locker room in a pair of game shorts, sparking some speculation that he was ready to play.<\/p>\n

Close\u2014but not quite, on both counts.<\/p>\n

The big-man duo from Miami\u2019s 2006 NBA title team remained sidelined Sunday for Game 1 of the Heat-Celtics matchup in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Haslem has not played since Nov. 20 because of a ruptured ligament in his left foot, and O\u2019Neal has been limited to 37 games this season because of nagging leg problems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was some thought about him,\u201d Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Haslem. \u201cIt was one of the more difficult decisions I\u2019ve had to make. Objectively, he\u2019s not quite there. He is making great strides, so we have to be patient and evaluate this objectively, not on the timeline of when the series starts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haslem went through such a workout Sunday that even the ballboy who was rebounding for him was dripping with sweat when it was over. Haslem said he had to prepare to play, even though he acknowledged that he wasn\u2019t certain he could convince the Heat that he\u2019s ready to return.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying,\u201d he said as he left the floor. \u201cIt\u2019s not up to me. I\u2019m just working to get ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celtics coach Doc Rivers was amused when hearing that O\u2019Neal appeared in the locker room wearing the uniform shorts. If O\u2019Neal was trying to change Rivers\u2019 mind, he doubly failed: Rivers didn\u2019t even see him in part of the uniform.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuit and tie status today,\u201d Rivers said.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Neal missed 33 of Boston\u2019s final 34 regular-season games, and the one exception was inglorious. He played 5 1\/2 minutes against Detroit on April 3, making all three of his shots before pulling up lame and limping into the locker room in obvious pain.<\/p>\n

The Celtics have waited patiently, and Rivers said that may pay off.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s getting very close,\u201d Rivers said. \u201cHonestly, we had to actually make a decision today, so that\u2019s better than what we had to do in the past. So he\u2019s getting close. Maybe next game. If not, I would say Game 3.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Celtics made one change for Sunday, adding former Heat guard Carlos Arroyo<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> to their active 12-man roster in place of Sasha Pavlovic<\/a>(notes)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe knows this team,\u201d Rivers said. \u201cHe was in their training camp. He was in their practices. He knows their personnel. So I just thought he may be able to help us in some way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miami made no changes to its active roster from what it used in the first round against Philadelphia, with Dexter Pittman<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and former starting center Erick Dampier<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> joining Haslem on the inactive list. Avery Bradley<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> was also inactive for Boston, joining O\u2019Neal and Pavlovic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
