Arsene Wenger was proud of his players after Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United but admits his frustration on the season as a whole.<\/p>\n

The Gunners earned a narrow home success against the Premier League leaders at the Emirates to leave Chelsea still in with a shout of catching the Red Devils this term.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aaron Ramsey scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute, while Nemanja Vidic could have easily seen red for a handball in the first half that was not given.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wenger hailed the character of his side but revealed it was frustrating to beat United and still be some way off the pace.<\/span><\/p>\n

He told Sky Sports<\/em>: “We needed to show that we had spirit and fighting discipline. We had a lot of possession in the first half and had some chances.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We reduced Man Utd to very few chances and overall until we scored the goal we were the dominant team.<\/span><\/p>\n

“After that you could see the desire to protect the goal was stronger than to go forward. Overall I feel very proud of the character we have shown. They have given everything.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked if the result was hard to take because of the current league position, he added: “Yes. It’s very frustrating. But you want to consider the result in itself today and congratulate the team.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You can’t do much more because for us it’s important to be as close as possible to the top and to qualify for the Champions League.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Let’s win our three games if we can, let’s give everything. We have been so unlucky this season, maybe we will get some luck in the last three games. We don’t want to have any regret.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Vidic incident<\/span><\/h4>\n

Meanwhile, striker Robin van Persie was left fuming following the decision by referee Chris Foy not to award a penalty for Vidic’s handball.<\/span><\/p>\n

“A clear penalty and in my opinion a straight red,” the Dutchman said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked what the referee had said to him, he replied: “At first nothing because he wasn’t sure, but I asked him again just after half-time and he said it wasn’t a penalty but I’m sure if he sees it again then he will agree with me.<\/span><\/p>\n

“If that United’s penalty appeal wrongly turned down is the case then it’s 1-1 on that one but in the end I think we played better today.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We wanted it more. They played just on the counter-attack so in the end I think a fair result.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It was all about pride today. The fans were great. It was up to us to show some dignity and some honour. We did that today so we’re very pleased with that.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Match-winner Aaron Ramsey remarked: “Our target was just to keep going now until the end of the season, to win all our games and see where we end up from there.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’ve done the first bit today. We’ve still got a few more games left so hopefully we can win them as well.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
