{"id":412682,"date":"2011-05-01T15:02:34","date_gmt":"2011-05-01T15:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/01\/mugabe-attends-beatification-of-former-pope\/"},"modified":"2011-05-01T15:02:34","modified_gmt":"2011-05-01T15:02:34","slug":"mugabe-attends-beatification-of-former-pope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/01\/mugabe-attends-beatification-of-former-pope\/","title":{"rendered":"Mugabe Attends Beatification of Former Pope"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"46.2555289102\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.herald.co.zw\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/a47391c0herald180.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"The Herald (Harare)\" title=\"Visit The Herald (Harare)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Itai Musengeyi<\/p>\n<p>29 April 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>President Mugabe left Harare last night to attend the beatification &#8211; the final step before sainthood &#8211; of the late Pope John Paul II tomorrow at the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying him was the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe and senior Government officials.<\/p>\n<p>Cde Mugabe is a Catholic and is among VIPs invited by the Vatican for the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>According to BBC, other VIPs include the president of Pope John Paul&#8217;s native Poland, Bronislaw Komrowski, who will be accompanied by Senate Speaker, Grzegorz Schetyna, and House Speaker, Bogdan Borusewicz.<\/p>\n<p>King Albert and Queen Paola of Belgium are among the European royalty who will travel to the Vatican to attend the beatification, while the Duke of Gloucester, Richard Windsor, will represent the British royal family.<\/p>\n<p>Irish president Mary McAleese is also expected to attend.<\/p>\n<p>President Mugabe also attended the funeral mass for the late Pope in 2005 at the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p>Media reports said Vatican officials expect around one million people to attend the ceremony which will be led by Pope Benedict XVI and will take place in St Peter&#8217;s Square before a vast TV audience.<\/p>\n<p>Beatification is the final step before sainthood.<\/p>\n<p>It arose as a way of authorising veneration to a candidate in the local area where she or he lived.
