{"id":411124,"date":"2011-04-30T19:05:45","date_gmt":"2011-04-30T19:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/04\/30\/harlequins-16-34-salford\/"},"modified":"2011-04-30T19:05:45","modified_gmt":"2011-04-30T19:05:45","slug":"harlequins-16-34-salford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/04\/30\/harlequins-16-34-salford\/","title":{"rendered":"Harlequins 16-34 Salford"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span><strong>Harlequins (4) 16<\/strong><br \/><strong>Tries:<\/strong> Burnett, Ambler, Melling <strong>Goals:<\/strong> Gale 2<br \/><strong>Salford (22) 34<\/strong><br \/><strong>Tries:<\/strong> Clay 2, Godwin, Patten, Nero, Paleaaesina, Anderson<br \/><strong>Goals:<\/strong> Holdsworth 3<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>Adam Clay scored two tries on his Salford debut in their convincing 34-16 victory at Harlequins.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The home side led inside two minutes through Mike Burnett but Clay&#8217;s two tries gave Salford a four-point lead.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne Godwin, Luke Patten and Chris Nero all went over as the visitors went to the break with a 22-4 advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Luke Ambler and Chris Melling scored second-half tries for Harlequins, with Iafeta Paleaaesina and Vinnie Anderson going over for Salford in between.<\/p>\n<p>Harlequins have now lost seven of their last eight matches, while Salford ease above their hosts in the Super League table.<\/p>\n<p>Quins began in fine style with Luke Gale&#8217;s long floating pass enabling Burnett to go over in the corner.<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" align=\"right\" width=\"231\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr readability=\"4\">\n<td width=\"5\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/0ca56104o.gif.gif\" width=\"5\" height=\"1\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" \/><\/td>\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<div>\n<p><strong>I think this win sends out a real message &#8211; not just to everyone else but to ourselves<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><br clear=\"all\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Stand-in Salford coach Phil Veivers<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Clay, who was Salford&#8217;s senior academy player of the year in 2010, went close to a debut try minutes later but was bundled into touch by Melling.<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old did not have to wait long for his first points as a Salford first-team player as he wriggled out of a couple of tackles to touch down.<\/p>\n<p>Clay scored his second try on 22 minutes, beating off the attention of David Howell to give Salford the lead.<\/p>\n<p>The visitors then hit Quins with three unanswered tries, Godwin burrowed over from close range, Patten stepped inside after some weak tackling and Nero streaked clear following a fortuitous charge down of Holdsworth&#8217;s kick.<\/p>\n<p>Salford&#8217;s 18-point half-time lead was cut when Ambler went over under the sticks but they were soon on the board again as Paleaaesina&#8217;s hotly disputed try was awarded by the video referee.<\/p>\n<p>Paleaaesina looked to have fallen short as he went to ground the ball but the officials felt otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Holdsworth booted a penalty and Anderson added a further try, racing clear after intercepting Howell&#8217;s loose pass.<\/p>\n<p>Melling did score Harlequins&#8217; third try of the night but it was merely a consolation.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>Harlequins coach Rob Powell:<br \/><\/strong> &#8220;Confidence is easy to build but it is also easy to let it slip and we are a team without confidence at the minute.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You would not believe it is the same group of players who did so well in the first five weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We lacked energy and it was probably our worst home display this campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are really struggling in defence at the moment &#8211; the players know what needs to be done and they practice well, but they go out there and don&#8217;t do it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My challenge is to get the team back to what it was at the start of the season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stand-in Salford coach Phil Veivers:<br \/><\/strong> &#8220;It was a huge win for us.
