Blackburn secured a potentially season-saving 1-0 victory over local rivals Bolton at Ewood Park.<\/p>\n
A 20th minute strike from the impressive Martin Olsson was enough to secure all three points for Steve Kean’s side as Rovers ended a streak of 10 games without a win to boost its survival chances.<\/p>\n
Both sides looked to chase the game in the first half and Owen Coyle’s side was unlucky not to take the lead in the 18th minute as Rodrigo Moreno struck a rasping effort onto the post following some tentative Blackburn defending. The Spaniard was made to pay only minutes later as Olsson hammered a low effort past Adam Bogdan to give the struggling hosts a vital lead.<\/p>\n
Steve Kean\u2019s team sheet promised an admirable intent on Blackburn\u2019s part to attack the visitors, as Rovers lined up with both Benjani and Jason Roberts spearheading the front line. However, the absence of Junior Hoilett from the hosts\u2019 squad took the shine off the lineup, with the talismanic Canadian unable to overcome hamstring trouble.<\/p>\n
Reeling from Wednesday\u2019s defeat to Fulham, Owen Coyle opted to replace the evergreen Jussi Jaaskelainen with youngster Adam Bogdan in goal and was forced to bring David Wheater in as right-back to replace the sidelined Gretar Steinsson.<\/p>\n
The game started amidst an atmosphere of typical ferocity for a derby and the hosts responded superbly. Benjani came close to rewarding the early endeavor only two minutes in, latching on to a knock down from Brett Emerton only to see his stretching effort fall wide of Adam Bogdan’s post.<\/p>\n
Both sides were looking to take the incentive and put pressure on their opponents and as one attack broke down at one end, the possibility of another presented itself in the opposing box. Neither team was displaying football for the purists but on the ninth minutes, Rodrigo Moreno hit an effort worthy of any derby. Latching on to Kevin Davies’ knock down, the young Spaniard lashed a half volley wide from 25 yards out much to relief of the Blackburn fans, who were already showing signs of relegation nerves.<\/p>\n
They weren’t the only ones as the Rovers’ defense showed a hesitancy befitting a tie of such magnitude on the 18 minute mark as Bolton had the chance of the opening 20 minutes. Salgado, weakly heading clear a deep freekick, put the ball on a plate to Moreno, who slammed his effort onto the post. He should have done better in truth and in a game as end-to-end as this, you sensed that the youngster would be made to pay for his sloppy finishing.<\/p>\n
It didn’t take long for Steve Kean’s charges to turn the knife on Moreno as Olsson, who had been the catalyst behind much of Blackburn’s counter attacks, picked up the ball 20-yards out, jinked past Wheater onto his left foot and lashed a superb low effort past the helpless Bogdan. A goal had been coming for either side and the winger’s incisiveness had looked likely to pay dividends from the off.<\/p>\n
The 22-year-old Swede was in no way finished and his presence in the Bolton half grew more ominous as the opening 45 minutes played out. With neither side able to maintain possession for a period of any great length, the counter attacking abilities of both Olsson and Moreno for the visitors were looking the most likely keys to unlock two impressive defensive outfits.<\/p>\n
The second half began with nervous energy swirling around Ewood Park and Blackburn’s desire to double its lead was palpable, though it was scrappiness that characterized the opening exchanges of the second 45 minutes.<\/p>\n
Chances had been few and far between up until the hour mark but with a vociferous crowd increasing the intensity, the game blossomed into a counter attacking duel with chances for both teams, the most threatening falling to Benjani in the six-yard box, offering the promise of goals to come in the game’s closing stages.<\/p>\n
Both managers prowled the technical areas, unsure whether to stick or twist and it was Owen Coyle who blinked first, bringing on Lee to replace Moreno who for all his invention, had been unforgivably wasteful in the Rovers 18-yard box. Steve Kean responded in turn by bringing on Niko Kalinic much to the delight of the home fans. A bold move from the Scot who would have been forgiven for looking to shut up shop as the game entered its final 20 minutes.<\/p>\n
Blackburn was still looking to press as the game neared its conclusion, presumably fearful of allowing pressure to be exerted on it deep in its own half. The nerves were close to unbearable and should have been eased when Diouf, unmarked in the area, hammered the ball over Bogdan’s bar.<\/p>\n
Five minutes off added time were announced and met by groans from the home fans, whose nails had been chewed from the opening minute. Rovers hung on though, having delivered a second half performance of the utmost maturity and nerve. “We are staying up”, was the chant from the home fans and having secured a vital three points in the most trying of circumstances, they may not be far wrong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
