{"id":409944,"date":"2011-04-30T13:12:33","date_gmt":"2011-04-30T13:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/04\/30\/ruling-party-now-governs-18-states\/"},"modified":"2011-04-30T13:12:33","modified_gmt":"2011-04-30T13:12:33","slug":"ruling-party-now-governs-18-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/04\/30\/ruling-party-now-governs-18-states\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruling Party Now Governs 18 States"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"188.098950333\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisdaylive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/cbde1a16thisday180.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"This Day (Lagos)\" title=\"Visit This Day (Lagos)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>John Shiklam and Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi<\/p>\n<p>30 April 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Kaduna \u2014 The Peoples Democratic Party has taken its haul in the April gubernatorial election to 18 with the victory of Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda and his Kaduna State counterpart Patrick Yakowa in the governorship election held in the two states on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Yuguda defeated his main opponent, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar of the Congress for Progressive Change, to retain his seat.<\/p>\n<p>Yakowa, on his part, beat his close rival, Alhaji Saeed Haruna also of the CPC.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing the results Friday night in Bauchi, the Independent National Electoral Commission&#8217;s returning officer for the state declared that Yuguda polled 771, 503 votes while Tuggar got 238,436 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Baba Tela of the Action Congress of Nigeria polled 107, 237 votes while Nazir Camawa of the All Nigeria Peoples Party scored 102, 093 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Results from Misau and Ningi local government areas were cancelled following alleged electoral malpractices recorded in the areas.<\/p>\n<p>Before the final declaration Friday night, Yuguda was leading comfortably in 16 of the 20 local government areas in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Declaring the results of the Kaduna governorship poll at the state secretariat of INEC, the Returning Officer, Prof. Mustapha Abdullahi, said Yakowa polled a total of 1,339,487 votes as against Haruna&#8217;s 1,114,987 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Yakowa won in 12 of the 23 local governments of the state namely Sanga, Kudan, Kauru, Kaura, Kajuru, Kagarko, Jema&#8217;a, Jaba, Chikun, Giwa, Kachia and Zangon- Kataf.<\/p>\n<p>The CPC won in 11 local governments &#8211; Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Birnin-Gwari, Igabi, Lere, Makarfi, Sabon-Gari, Soba, Ikara, Kubau and Zaria.<\/p>\n<p>The governor also scored 25 percent in 19 of the 23 local governments while the CPC scored 25 percent in 14 local government areas.<\/p>\n<p>The result of the elections in the Kaduna North Senatorial zone and five House of Representatives seats in the state also held on Thursday as well as those of the state House of Assembly were yet to be announced by late Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts said the major factor that gave Yakowa victory was the decision on Tuesday by the various factions within the ruling PDP in the state to work for the success of the party in the governorship and state assembly elections.<\/p>\n<p>Alhaji Suleiman Hunkuyi who contested the party&#8217;s governorship primary with Yakowa had on Tuesday held a meeting with stakeholders in his campaign organisation, where it was resolved that Yakowa should be supported during the election.<\/p>\n<p>Hunkuyi and his group were aggrieved at the outcome of the primary election which he lost to Yakowa and had been waging a legal battle against Yakowa&#8217;s emergence as PDP candidate before the sudden change of mind.<\/p>\n<p>Sources said the Hunkuyi camp in the PDP may have contributed significantly to the dismal performance of the party in the previous election in the state and PDP, having realised it, decided to approach the camp for reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>It was further learnt that Yakowa would have actually reconciled with the Hunkuyi camp and carried everybody along, but Vice-President Namadi Sambo allegedly opposed the idea, dismissing the group as insignificant to the party.<\/p>\n<p>The PDP had lost previous elections held in the state, including the presidential election to the opposition CPC.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Publicity Committee of the Hunkuyi Campaign organisation, Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, who spoke with newsmen after the meeting of the organisation, said their decision to support PDP in the remaining elections was based on the fact that in an ideal democracy, the party was supreme.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have therefore resolved to work for the success of Yakowa during the election,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Yakowa has, however, called on opposition parties in the state to join hands with him in building the state.<\/p>\n<p>He promised to run an all inclusive government.<\/p>\n<p>The governor who spoke shortly after he was declared winner of the poll thanked opposition contestants who, according to him fought a gallant fight.<\/p>\n<p>He urged them to put the contest behind and contribute their quota in the development of the state.<\/p>\n<p>The governor also paid tributes to all those who lost their lives in the post -election violence, which rocked the state, saying their death would not be in vain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the words of the Holy book, I say, indeed, this day was made by the Lord, we rejoice and we are glad in it.
