CINCINNATI (AP)\u2014The Bengals have Carson Palmer\u2019s<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> replacement onboard.<\/p>\n

With their franchise quarterback insisting he wants out, the Bengals took TCU\u2019s Andy Dalton in the second round of the NFL draft on Friday night, their second straight pick aimed at replacing one of their most important players.<\/p>\n

They took A.J. Green<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> from Georgia with the fourth overall pick in the opening round, bringing in a receiver who can take over for Chad Ochocinco<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> the franchise\u2019s all-time leading pass catcher. One round later, they brought in a new quarterback.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was good,\u201d coach Marvin Lewis said. \u201cWe spent a lot of time on this, no question. It\u2019s a big, important, important pick, important piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dalton quickly will get the chance to become the next face of one of the NFL\u2019s most dysfunctional franchises. The Bengals have only two winning records in the last 20 years, going through quarterbacks at a pell-mell pace while continuing to lose regularly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s going to be a great quarterback in this league, in my opinion,\u201d new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said. \u201cHe\u2019s going to get a lot of opportunity to do that, come in here and compete for the job right away. What else do you want as a rookie quarterback?<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I asked him at the (scouting) combine. I said, \u2018Are you wanting to come in here and be a backup quarterback somewhere and learn for three years, or are you ready to start in six months?\u2019 He said, \u2018I\u2019m ready to start right now, let\u2019s go.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n

Depending upon what happens with Palmer, he could be running the offense in a few months\u2014a stunning change for a team that made the playoffs only two years ago.<\/p>\n

The Bengals hit a franchise low point last season, matching the club record by losing 10 in a row and finishing 4-12 with an offense built around Palmer, receivers Ochocinco and Terrell Owens<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> and running back Cedric Benson<\/a>(notes)<\/a>.<\/span> It was so alarming that Lewis played out his contract, unsure he wanted to stay.<\/p>\n

After two days of talks with owner Mike Brown<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> the coach agreed to an extension. Then, Palmer said he wanted out, asking for a trade. He told Brown that he\u2019d rather retire than return. Brown has so far refused, leaving them in a stalemate.<\/p>\n

Ochocinco has a year left on his contract, but thinks he\u2019ll be released. Owens won\u2019t be back. And Benson is a free agent.<\/p>\n

Having Dalton around could make the Bengals more comfortable with the thought of trading Palmer, although Lewis sidestepped questions about a trade on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not talking about that,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cThis is Andy Dalton\u2019s day. It\u2019s a great day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pick totally rearranges the Bengals\u2019 depth chart at the position. Their No. 2 quarterback is Jordan Palmer<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> who is Carson\u2019s younger brother. Jordan Palmer has never started an NFL game. Third-string quarterback Dan LeFevour<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> was a rookie last season who never got into a game.<\/p>\n

Dalton could quickly move to the top of the list. Lewis thinks he can be ready to start next season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel real confident in that, if he had to,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cI really do. And I think that\u2019s what really drew us to keeping our fingers crossed so much, what we felt was his maturity and his readiness to be able to stop in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
