Garki (Jigawa) \u2014 Woman activist, Hajiya Laila Dogonyaro who died on Thursday was laid to rest yesterday at Garki, Jigawa State, in the presence of hundreds of sympathisers.<\/p>\n

Hajiya Dogonyaro passed on Thursday at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, following a protracted illness.
She was aged 66.<\/p>\n

At the burial were the immediate past governor of the state, Alhaji Saminu Turaki, a former military administrator of the state, Colonel Zakariyya Maimakai, the Emir of Ringim, Alhaji Sayyadi Mahund Ringim and politicians.<\/p>\n

She was honoured with the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2001 in recognition of her activism.
She was associated with a number of\u00a0 feminist movements and was highly vocal on feminine political issues. She started off fighting for the suffering\u00a0 women in the North and later began to agitate for the participation of women in politics.<\/p>\n

During the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Hajia Laila Dogonyaro openly decried the face-off between the House of Representatives and President Olusegun Obasanjo and advised both parties to dialogue in the interest of the country , saying Nigerians were more interested on developmental programmes than on squabbles among leaders.
Dogonyaro was\u00a0 born of a Syrian father and Hausa-Fulani mother.<\/p>\n

She had managed diabetes\u00a0 and hypertension for many years.
She was educated only in\u00a0 primary school and was married off at age 12 but she later became an advocate for girl-child education.<\/p>\n

She was also very vocal against one of the biggest problems of Northern women which is\u00a0 VVF. , lamenting\u00a0 that women who suffer from this disease are subjected to serious pains by members of their families, who leave them to their fate.<\/p>\n

She was also a pioneer member of the Jami\u2019yar Matan Arewa which was founded in 1963 and a former\u00a0 president of the National Council for Women Societies. In 1998, Dogonyaro\u00a0 founded the Women\u2019s Opinion Leaders Forum.<\/p>\n

Dogonyaro is survived by\u00a0 four children: Mohammed Ahmed (the Sarkin Yakin Garki), Mairo Hassan Hussein (a magistrate in Abuja), Binta Dogonyaro and Isa Dogonyaro.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
