NEW YORK (AP)\u2014Bill Belichick pulled a surprise to begin the second round of the NFL draft Friday night. He stood still.<\/p>\n

Given their willingness to trade down every year, the New England Patriots<\/a> heard from several teams interested in that slot before taking Virginia cornerback Ras-I Dowling. Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett announced the pick.<\/p>\n

With court proceedings not yielding any changes in the labor situation\u2014the lockout still is lifted for now, and the league has not set up guidelines for trading or signing veterans\u2014the teams concentrated on top prospects who fell out of the first round. The fans\u2019 mood over the lockout hadn\u2019t changed as they again showered Commissioner Roger Goodell with boos when he said New England was on the clock.<\/p>\n

Dowling is a hard hitter who missed most of last season with a broken left ankle, starting only two games. The Patriots made out well with last year\u2019s first-round pick, cornerback Devin McCourty<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> and weren\u2019t afraid to go back to the secondary again.<\/p>\n

Buffalo also went for a cornerback, Aaron Williams of Texas, before Cincinnati selected TCU quarterback Andy Dalton. The Bengals\u2019 incumbent, Carson Palmer<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> has demanded a trade, and the addition of Dalton could pave the way for Palmer\u2019s exit\u2014whenever the league allows it.<\/p>\n

San Francisco immediately traded up with Denver to get the next spot and select the next QB: Colin Kaepernick of Nevada. Kaepernick also was an outstanding baseball prospect, a former pitcher with a powerful arm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
