West Brom<\/a> full-back Nicky Shorey<\/a> has revealed he was concerned about his lack of first-team football under former manager Roberto Di Matteo.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old, who joined from Aston Villa last summer, admits he felt his career was suffering a similar fate to his time whilst playing under Martin O\u2019Neill but insisted he knew he\u2019d be handed a chance at The Hawthorns.<\/p>\n

“The whole point of leaving Villa was to seek first team football and there was a sense of ‘here we go again’,” Shorey told West Brom\u2019s official website.<\/p>\n

“I left Villa to come here and play and it was all happening again.<\/p>\n

“I got a bit down but you have to keep going and I think anyone you ask would tell you I got my head down and worked hard, and believed I would get another chance.<\/p>\n

“Sometimes you don’t, no matter what you do, and that’s just the way it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shorey insists he\u2019s not bitter about his time at Villa Park and has praised Roy Hodgson for his man management since his arrival in February.<\/p>\n

“It would be quite easy to say I regret it just because I went there and it didn’t work out.<\/p>\n

“But I tried to learn from my experience at Villa. It’s definitely stood me in good stead. For the rest of my career I’m sure there’ll be periods when I’m not playing and I’ve got to get over that.<\/p>\n

“I learned a lot. I think you just have to take every experience as it comes, whether it’s a good one or a bad one, and take the best out of it.”<\/p>\n

“At Villa I felt quite isolated because for whatever reason it just wasn’t happening. The gaffer here makes you feel part of it, which is important.”<\/p>\n

Shorey is set to face former club as West Brom take on Aston Villa this Saturday and the full-back believes Hodgson\u2019s men can finish their Midlands rivals this term.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t think that in a million years we’d have a chance of finishing above them, not with the quality they’ve got,” he said.

<\/em><\/p>\n
