Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the ‘All Die Be Die’ slogan was a means of gingering up members of the party to stand up to the ‘evil’ machinations of the operatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the people of Ghana prepare for the 2012 presidential and legislative elections.<\/p>\n
He told Peace FM, an Accra-based private radio station yesterday, that he had no regrets for the statement, because it was a wake-up call to all members of the party to be vigilant.<\/p>\n
The veteran participant of dissent against authoritarianism over the years, added that all those who wanted to understand the statement have done so, because he was asking his party members to resist any attempt by anyone to intimidate them in the 2012 elections.<\/p>\n
Live on the radio station’s\u00a0 ‘Kokrokoo’ programme, the flagbearer told listeners that after the famous declaration to party faithful at Koforidua, ‘All Die Be Die’ has become a slogan, not only for his party, but people in other parties, and even non-political groups in the country.<\/p>\n
‘I have no regrets at all,’ he stressed.
Nana Akufo-Addo said if Ghanaians take a look at bye-elections under the NDC government, there are a lot of atrocities and negative activities of foot soldiers. ‘It seems as if the government is not interested in what is going on around them. So I thought that with the upcoming elections, I needed to ask my people to be alert, because with the level of intimidation going on in their government, anyone who would confront us, we should be ready for them as well,’ he explained.<\/p>\n
‘We are in a democracy, I have expressed my opinion. My party understands it,’ he added.<\/p>\n
On the upcoming primaries, the flag bearer stated that although he had friends in the party, he does not have favourites in the upcoming elections, as such if anyone uses his name as a means of getting people to vote for that person, that request should be ignored.<\/p>\n
‘The people have to vote for those who have the zeal to work and to help the party regain power in the 2012 elections,’ he explained.<\/p>\n
The NPP leader said those who could get a lot of votes for the NPP in the 2012 elections were those he would want to work with, and not people who would go round and use his name as a means of getting votes, when they cannot help the party.<\/p>\n
According to the flag bearer, in the NPP, you can not get all the people to have the same view on an issue, because the democracy Ghanaians are practicing calls for different opinions, where the people should choose their own people.<\/p>\n
‘You are those living in the constituencies, and you know the one who can do the job best, so you vote for that person’.<\/p>\n
He said what he thinks about mostly, is the 4.5 million people who voted for him in the last elections, which number he believes would increase by 2012. Their welfare and what best he could do to make sure that their dreams came to pass was of paramount importance.<\/p>\n
Touching on the next presidential elections, Nana Akufo-Addo said 2012 would be different from 2008, because the NDC is now in government and the NPP in opposition, so obviously, there would be a difference between the two.<\/p>\n
He said, looking back at 2008, he believes that what the people wanted was what they voted for. He has, therefore, taken the last election results in good faith, because that was what the majority of the people wanted.<\/p>\n
On the Ya- Na murder case, the astute politician maintained that if someone does something contrary to the law of the land, it should not be Parliamentarians, Ministers or the President who should pronounce on what should happen to the person. It is only judges who could pronounce on such offending people.<\/p>\n
‘If judges give their ruling, it should be taken in good faith, because they have the final say,’ he stressed.<\/p>\n
Nana Akufo-Addo said the appeal by the government in the Ya Na case was welcome, but what was becoming nauseating was the fact that judges were being mocked at, with all manner of interpretations that the NPP had a hand in the judgment.<\/p>\n
‘If that is the case, then we should close our courts and adjudicate cases in Parliament and the Castle.’<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
