One thousand trainees from the Sigma Base Oil and Gas Skills Training Programme have passed out after undertaking four month training in electrical, pipe-fitting, fabrication and welding in readiness of the expected gas commercialization project to commence at Bonyere.<\/p>\n

The trainees have also qualified to pursue further studies at the Harvard Marine Petroleum Institute at Takoradi in June this year. The Harvard Marine Training Institute will train the grandaunds\u2019 in a 16-week course on the environment and related courses in the offshore oil and gas sector .<\/p>\n

Speaking at the passing out ceremony, Rev (Dr) Paul Henry Dsane, the Assistant General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Ghana said there is the need for the business sector to be creative, innovative and strategic to advantage of the opportunities in the oil and gas industry. \u201cThey must also enhance their commercial activities and customer services to give them access to the available opportunities\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

He said the youth must be technologically literate \u201cby researching on what they can do, must be abreast with businesses in the oil and gas sector and prepare themselves for sustainable employment\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said training the Ghanaian youth for the industry should be both private and public partnership and that government support is very critical. This, he noted will help meet the significant of local content participation otherwise the success of the local content policy becomes an illusion.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ebow Haizel Ferguson, the Director of Sigma Base Technical Service Ghana Limited stated that the company is well positioned to take and execute contracts for local skilled workers.
\u201cIn the absence of this, we will be compelled to extend invitation to other foreign nationals with the requisite skills to come and take over our jobs which will not augur well for our infant industry\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

He added that currently, many of the trainees are qualified to take up jobs in the oil and gas sector as assistants in the various fields.<\/p>\n

Therefore, he appealed to the oil and gas companies to grant contract to the company since it has qualified engineers and technicians to take up various jobs. \u201cWe are ready to receive any assistance the government may offer us in order to train the mass of unemployed youth in the country\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Awulae Annor Agyei, the Omanhene of Western Nzema Traditional Council pointed out that a lot of systems have to be put in place so that the most competent ones who qualify for job in this sector will be given the opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin the next 10 years, 90 per cent of people needed to work in this sector should be the locals\u201d, he said. He urged government utilize revenue accrued from the oil and gas sector properly especially in infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
