Outgoing Lusaka District Commissioner (DC) Christah Kalulu has said the K17 billion works on the Lusaka drainage system by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and other stakeholders have been successfully completed.<\/p>\n

Ms Kalulu said during an inspection of the drainage system in Makeni that the project, dubbed ‘Operation Blue Ngwenya’ would now be handed over to the Lusaka City Council (LCC).<\/p>\n

“I can safely say that we have met our objectives and in a week’s time we will demobilise and leave the rest to the Lusaka City Council and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing,” she said.<\/p>\n

She said the project was meant to mitigate flooding in Lusaka by minimising the flow of water to the Blue and Ngwenya dams through the Bombay drainage in Kamwala and other surrounding areas and maximizing the flow of water through the Kanyama-Makeni drainages.<\/p>\n

Water collected from Kanyama, Makeni and other surrounding areas passed through the Makeni drainages before being discharged in Chilongolo stream and eventually into the Kafue River.<\/p>\n

Ms Kalulu who is also Lusaka District Disaster Management Committee chairperson said disaster-related programmes had been addressed and she expressed happiness with the smooth flow of water in the Makeni drainages, but bemoaned the dumping of garbage and raw sewer in the Kamwala drainage by people in that area.<\/p>\n

She commended the Blue Ngwenya Operation team which also comprised the Zambia National Service (ZNS), the Zambia Army and the Rural Roads Unit (RRU) for their work.<\/p>\n

DMMU Principal Operations officer Rodney Kalota also expressed concern over the indiscriminate discharge of raw sewer and garbage into the Kamwala drainage and appealed to the community in the area to refrain from doing so if they were to benefit from the infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Mr Kalota said the council would now put in the concrete lining on the drainages, while 13 crossing points had been put up in Kamwala.<\/p>\n
