\nThe President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, Comrade Udoma, is still on the run after he was alleged to have snatched and made away with ballot papers and other electoral materials for last Tuesday\u2019s election meant for the University\u2019s polling unit.<\/p>\n

Udoma was said to have led other students of the institution armed with assorted weapons to the venue of the election were they attacked the electoral officers and carted away materials.<\/p>\n

The governorship, state assembly and re-schedule Uyo Senatorial elections slated for last Tuesday in the state could not hold at the polling unit as Comrade Udoma was alleged to have carted away the materials to unknown destination. Security men in the state are said to be hunting for him with a view to recovering the materials.<\/p>\n

Comrade Udoma could not be reached for comment on the allegation. However, the leader of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) election monitoring team nationwide, Comrade Ibrahim Garba Kunya of Bayero University Kano who was in the state when the incident happened, described the action of Comrade Udoma as unlawful and criminal. He said NANS will never support any form of illegality by its members.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have waded into the matter but unfortunately there is nothing we can do to help the situation. NANS is too credible to be seen to be involved in soliciting for anybody over organized criminal acts. He is educated and as the SUG President of the University of Uyo we expect that he should be able to know what to do within the ambits of the law if he is aggrieved. Going to cart away election materials is criminal and we condemn it. I have discussed with the state REC on the matter and I am not sure we can be of much help,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Maria Owi who confirmed the incident said security operatives in the state are trying to recover ballot papers and other stolen electoral materials. She could not give further details. Police Public Relations officer (PPRO), ASP Onyeaka Orji who confirmed the report could not also give further details.<\/p>\n
