Verdict:<\/span> I was scared silly<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t really do horror films.<\/p>\n

The artifice and manipulation involved usually seem so transparent that to succumb to anything like real fear is akin to tattooing ‘credulous fool’ across your forehead.<\/p>\n

Even when they do work \u2014 for example, 2007’s Paranormal Activity, whose producers here get their hands on a much bigger budget \u2014 it is usually one’s imagination that produces the biggest frights.<\/p>\n

I’m not sure why this terrifying story of demonic possession succeeds in defying all of these truisms, but my heart rate is testament to the fact that it does.<\/p>\n

A troubled child drifts into a coma after falling and, having baffled doctors, he and his life-support machine move back to the family home, where mum Renai (Rose Byrne) is soon hearing things go bump in the night.<\/p>\n

‘Malfunctioning’ baby monitors, burglar alarms et al add to the mounting tension.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Things seem to be speeding towards a derivative conclusion when a couple of comedy ghostbusters (Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell) turn up.<\/p>\n

They’re in the employ of a medium (Lin Shaye) who arrives with a possible solution to the family\u2019s plight.<\/p>\n

Impressively, she brings some credibility to the bonkers events.<\/p>\n

Ultimateley, however, once the lights have come up you realise that behind the beautifully choreographed frights, there was very little going on.<\/p>\n
