More than 100 others were wounded.

“We accepted the Gulf proposal to avoid the spilling of Yemeni blood, but if killing does not stop, we will continue the revolution and the government will never be forgiven for the massacres against the people,” the statement reads.

“It seems that the Saleh regime is using the GCC proposal to kill people and spill the blood of Yemenis. We will not accept the proposal if the violence doesn’t immediately end,” it adds.

Wednesday’s reported attacks represented one of the deadliest days in the weeks-long protests that have pitted demonstrators against Saleh.

“The language of bullets and killing is what this regime wants to spread,” a medical staff member told CNN. “It’s a massacre against humanity and human rights.”

Though both Saleh and the Yemeni opposition have agreed to the deal in principle, they have yet to sign the agreement, which stipulates that Saleh agree to transfer power and leave office within 30 days of doing so, and provides immunity for him and those who served in his regime.

The agreement also calls for a unity government to be formed within seven days.

The GCC — a bloc of six oil-producing Gulf nations — has been working to ease tensions between Saleh and an increasingly restive opposition.

But Amnesty International said Thursday that neither Saleh nor his political allies should be given immunity from prosecution.

“President Ali Abdullah Saleh must not be allowed to evade accountability for the long catalogue of human rights crimes committed under his rule,” said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International’s director for the Middle East and North Africa, citing arbitrary arrests, torture and unlawful killings.

“He must not be awarded a ‘get-out-of-jail’ card to walk free from any question of investigation or justice for what has been done under his authority.”

Human Rights Watch issued a similar statement.

“President Saleh and those who implement his orders, take note: No immunity deal will absolve you of responsibility for widespread unlawful killings,” said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “Yemeni courts and foreign governments will still be obligated to hold you to account.”

Saleh, who has been in power since 1978, has served as a staunch U.S. ally in the fight against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

He reiterated Thursday that the government will sign the deal “in order to avoid the bloodshed and return the Yemeni political and economic situation to normal,” the state-run Saba News Agency reported on its website.

He also accused Qatar of involvement in supporting the opposition. “Qatar is now financing the chaos in Yemen, Egypt and Syria and every other Arab country,” he said. “We will not sign the Gulf initiative if a representative of Qatar attended the meeting of foreign ministers of the GCC.”

In an interview with Russian state television that was aired by Yemen state television, Saleh said he plans to remain the head of his political party but will not run for office.

CNN’s Christine Theodorou contributed to this story

See the original article here:
Yemeni opposition threatens not to sign brokered deal

STORY HIGHLIGHTS Opposition issues statement that “massacres” of protesters must stop or unrest will continue The statement comes a day after 14 protesters were killed, the opposition says Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch oppose granting immunity to Sale (CNN) — Yemen’s opposition issued a statement Thursday warning that “massacres” against street protesters could derail a deal brokered by the Gulf Cooperation Council and agreed-to by President Ali Abdullah Saleh to end the demonstrations that have wracked the country since mid-February.

[6

0":"post-405916","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-local-news
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
