MINNEAPOLIS (AP)\u2014The Minnesota Supreme Court has cleared the way for the NFL to suspend Minnesota Vikings<\/a> defensive lineman Pat Williams<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> perhaps the final chapter in the closely watched anti-doping case.<\/p>\n

In a one-page order without comment, the court declined to consider Williams\u2019 appeal of a decision that had gone against both Pat Williams and teammate Kevin Williams<\/a>(notes)<\/a>,<\/span> who are not related. The order was signed Wednesday by Chief Justice Lorie Gildea and made public Thursday.<\/p>\n

Justice Alan Page, a former Viking, did not take part in the decision.<\/p>\n

The Williamses were initially suspended in 2008 for taking the weight-loss supplement StarCaps, which contained a banned diuretic called bumetanide that can mask the presence of steroids. They waged a long fight against the suspensions through federal and state courts, and the league allowed them to play pending a final resolution of the case.<\/p>\n

Kevin Williams gave up the fight last month because his attorney said he was tired of the litigation.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the decision means the case is finally over.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery court to consider the claims of the players and the (NFL Players Association) in this case has found them to be without merit and has found the NFL\u2019s actions to be consistent with the collectively bargained policy and with state law,\u201d Aiello said in a statement. \u201cWe are pleased that the Minnesota Supreme Court action today has put an end to this litigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Williamses, who were never accused of taking steroids, said they didn\u2019t know StarCaps contained bumetanide, which wasn\u2019t listed on the label.<\/p>\n

Their attorney, Peter Ginsberg, declined to say the legal fight is over because he hadn\u2019t had a chance to speak with Pat Williams, but he expects the NFL will proceed with the four-game suspensions against the players. He expressed hope that the NFLPA ultimately negotiates better testing and privacy protections for players.<\/p>\n

He took issue with the NFL\u2019s declaration of victory, saying the league had lost on important legal issues along the way. Ginsberg said the ruling means the players will suffer \u201ca dent in their reputation for no good reason, and the NFL believes that that is a victory. That position speaks for itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

The case established that the NFL is bound by Minnesota laws on drug testing in the workplace, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cKevin and Pat had the courage and strength to fight the NFL,\u201d Ginsberg said. \u201cSince a large part of their battle was to protect their teammates and all employees in Minnesota, they won the war.\u201d<\/p>\n

The case was watched by other major sports leagues\u2014including the MLB, NBA and NHL\u2014that supported the NFL and said their drug-testing programs would be at risk if players were allowed to challenge drug-testing policies in state courts. The NFL argued its anti-doping policy was a product of its collective bargaining agreement with the players\u2019 union and was governed by federal law.<\/p>\n

Saints defensive end Will Smith<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> and former Saints end Charles Grant<\/a>(notes)<\/a><\/span> tested positive for the same substance, but were not involved in the Minnesota lawsuit. The NFL had held off on enforcing their four-game suspensions until the Minnesota case was resolved. Grant is currently a free agent.<\/p>\n

Kevin Williams is scheduled to make $6 million in 2011, if the season happens. Pat Williams is a free agent. His agent, Angelo Wright, said Pat Williams still wants to play this season and the court ruling doesn\u2019t change anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had some interest. So we expect him to play,\u201d Wright said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
