The New Patriotic Party has called on the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) to cast wide its investigative net and probe into what it described as \u201cthe ridiculous and outrageous over-pricing of contracts under the government of Prof. J.E.A. Mills.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cataloguing a number of projects they suspect to be laced with corruption, the NPP said the situation had got out of hand and should be investigated before the country goes bankrupt over what it described as the naked corruption being perpetrated by some activists of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).<\/p>\n
In a statement signed by Mr Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie, Secretary General of the NPP, it cited a Ghana News Agency report that the new Eastern Regional Minister, Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, was himself shocked by the corruption he inherited in the award of contracts for school facilities.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, while a six-class-room block cost an average of GH\u00a280,000 under former President John Kufuor, the Mills government was spending such outrageous amounts as GH\u00a2261,000 on similar projects.<\/p>\n
The huge disparities and inexplicable jump in contract sums, the statement said, raised not only questions but also concerns about the seriousness of the government in cutting profligate spending and ensuring that the nation gets value for money.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe demand to know why in spite of the alleged inflationary downward trend, the cost of building a six-unit classroom block has shot up from GH\u00a280,000 to GH\u00a2261,000,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, a six classroom block constructed at the Krobo Girls Presbyterian Senior High School cost GH\u00a2200,000. This project was funded by the GETFund.<\/p>\n
At Krobo Girls, a very basic two-storey dormitory block with an assembly hall, also funded by GETFund, cost GH\u00a2800,000.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is just the tip of the iceberg. Under President Mills, corruption had shot up sky high like a sky scrapper, only competing with the inflated cost of living of the ordinary Ghanaian,\u201d it alleged.<\/p>\n
In Aburaman, in the Central Region, it also stated that a six-unit classroom block cost the Ghanaian taxpayer GH\u00a2230,000.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow can NDC tell Ghanaians that inflation was in single digits when the cost of Government projects have been so hyper-inflated? This corruption will only send Ghana back to HIPC. Ghanaians are getting poorer, way down the poverty line by the sheer volume of corruption under President Mills\u201d, it further alleged.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
