Lee Haskins is set to return to the ring, after more than a year out, but has seen his hopes of a tilt at the European flyweight title foiled again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 27-year-old has had a string of fights cancelled since he beat Commonwealth super-flyweight champion Don Broadhurst in December 2009.<\/p>\n

And a proposed meeting with Frenchman Karim Guerfi has fallen through after the teams failed to agree terms.<\/p>\n

Haskins will face Fikret Remziev over six rounds in Chippenham on Saturday.<\/p>\n

It is a long-awaited return to the ring for the British and Commonwealth champion, but the outing against the Bulgarian had been seen as a stepping stone to the Guerfi challenge and greater glories in Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n

“All these belts are nice to have, but it’s the world title belts that are the ones that every boxer wants,” Haskins told BBC Radio Bristol.<\/p>\n

However, after a remarkable four proposed European title bouts against Andrea Sarritzu were cancelled because of illness or injury the Bristolian has decided on an alternative route to reach the top.<\/p>\n

“It’s been very frustrating,” promoter Chris Sanigar told BBC Radio Bristol. “I’ve suggested going a different route with a couple of little wins, let’s get the British title fight again and then, if he felt like it, he will go to bantamweight and challenge Jamie McDonnell.<\/p>\n

“I’d only want Lee to challenge for the European title if it was another British guy.”<\/p>\n

Since Haskins last fought, the 26-year-old Remziev has been in the ring nine times, winning three bouts, to take his overall record to five wins from 20 outings with three knockouts.<\/p>\n

In comparison, Haskins has 20 wins from his 22 fights, with 10 knockouts, and is confident of adding another victory to his tally.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been waiting a long time and I’ve got on with it pretty fine,” added Haskins.<\/p>\n

“I’ve got my head down and just carried on training, ticking over and I haven’t been out of the gym once for eight months.<\/p>\n

“I would have liked to have kept it going and I would have liked to have had another three fights by now, but that’s the way things go sometimes.<\/p>\n

“But I’m feeling in the best shape ever. I’ve been doing a lot of sparring and training and I’m boxing better than I’ve ever boxed before.<\/p>\n

“I’m in great shape and I shouldn’t be worried or nervous. When you’re as good as me you don’t really have nerves.”<\/p>\n

The undercard to his return to the ring features a host of West country boxers, including Nick Blackwell who will take on Latvian Sergejs Savronovics before defending his English middleweight title against Derbyshire’s Matt Hainy in May.<\/p>\n

Swindon duo Andrew McCaffrey and Kelvin Young, Melksham’s Liam Richards, Dan Carr from Trowbridge and Bristol’s Dan Stewart are also in action.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
