Nairobi \u2014 It is the last call for elite runners to turn up in Mumias for the Athletics Kenya weekend meeting on Thursday ahead of next week’s season debut of the IAAF diamond League in Doha.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the event will be in two races, the 800m sprint for women and the 5,000m long distance where Olympic 800m champion Pamela Jelimo will retrace her steps to the two lap race for the first time in over a year out with a knee injury.<\/p>\n

Over to the 5,000m distance, a storm is brewing as youngster Dennis Masai, ther world junior 10,000m champion seek to emerge from the shadows of former World cross country 12km champion Joseph Ebuya over the 12-lap race.<\/p>\n

“Dennis will be running in Mumias in the 5,000m distance. He is in good shape and needs to win one or two races to gauge his preparedness as the season gains momentum,” said Moses Masai, his elder brother.<\/p>\n

The senior Masai, who is the world 10,000m bronze medallist, together with his sister Linet Masai, the champion over the 10,000m distance in women will give the event a bye as they polish up their skills ahead of their respective races in Shanghai and Hengelo Diamond league meetings.<\/p>\n

Daunting task<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I will not be running in Mumias. My training is focused on running in Hengelo and so will be Linet who is starting her track season in Hengelo over the 5,000m,” said Moses.<\/p>\n

But the two sibling have entrusted their younger brother Dennis to raffle the feathers in Mumias.<\/p>\n

He however faces a daunting task against Ebuya, who took part in the 1500m in the opening two meetings in Narok and Kisii, but will move back to his speciality in Mumias.<\/p>\n

Ebuya like Jelimo and Jepkosgei are returning to their traditional races as focus turns on the August World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.<\/p>\n

“It’s quite a busy season and the earlier we start, the better for all of us. I did 1,500m in the opening two meeting because I wanted to gauge my speed. I think it is now time to switch to my event proper and focus,” said Ebuya.<\/p>\n

World Championships<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ebuya said the local meetings have been very competitive and those sitting on the fence to wait for the national trails will be in for a rude shock.<\/p>\n

“This young guys are really competitive and winning against them is like winning a gold medal in a world event. What is even surprising is the fact that they are taking this meetings very seriously with one eye glued on the World Championships,” he added.<\/p>\n

Ebuya is expected to face Justine Cheruiyot who won the event in Kisii and David Bett and Geoffrey Kirui who finished second and this respectively in the same meeting.<\/p>\n

At the same time 16 Uganda athletes will return to Mumias led by Doris Chesang who finished second in women’s 3,000m steeplechase in Kisii.<\/p>\n

Also in the squad is Agnes Aneno, third in 200m during the Kisii weekend meeting. The Ugandans want to run in Kenya, which they view as superior competitor in order to get the qualifying times for the world championship.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Ethiopian teenager Merima Mohammed will be targeting a course record at the Metro Group Marathon Duesseldorf on May 8.<\/p>\n

The 18 year-old Ethiopian boasts a personal best of 2:23:06 from her third place finish at the 2010 Toronto Marathon, which makes her the fastest woman ever entered into this IAAF Bronze Label Road Race.<\/p>\n

This year she has already shown fine Marathon form, when she took second place at January’s Mumbai Marathon clocking 2:26:57.<\/p>\n

It was only in the final strides of the race that she was beaten in Mumbai by her compatriot Koren Yal who snatched victory by just one second!<\/p>\n
