The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Gushegu constituency of the Northern Region has taken a swipe at the District Chief Executive (DCE) and constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area.<\/p>\n

The ruling party has been accused of bias and using national security operatives to politically harass and intimidate supporters of the NPP in the name of conducting fresh investigations into the political disturbances in the area in 2008.<\/p>\n

Reprisal attacks in Gushiegu prior to the 2008 elections resulted in the death of four persons including a sub-chief, and the razing down of several houses and properties running into thousands of cedis.<\/p>\n

But the NPP secretariat maintain that the NDC Constituency Organizer, Masahudu Issahaku aka Abiola, is the one who led NDC thugs to attack NPP supporters in Kpatinga and the residence of Abukari Shikuru (Yishe-lana), which escalated to Gushegu, resulting in the unfortunate situation.<\/p>\n

They therefore find it strange that the same Abiola has now become an apparatchik of the national security, implicating his perceived political opponents and causing their arrest. The NPP in Gushegu said it saw the fresh investigation as nothing but a tool for political vendetta targeted at NPP members and supporters to ensure that the party did not return to power in 2012.<\/p>\n

According to the Constituency Communication Director, Ziblim Yamusah, they had credible information that the DCE for the area, Fuseini Alhassan, was actively supplying arms and ammunitions to NDC supporters to prepare them to unleash violence and mayhem on their political opponents.<\/p>\n

He noted that on August 5, 2010, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the police in Gushegu, upon a tip-off, intercepted a consignment of ammunitions which was traced to one Murtala, whom they described as a notorious arms dealer, and accused him of being the brain behind the skirmishes in the area in 2008.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will interest you to know that the constituency executives of the NDC became alarmed upon hearing the seizure of the cache of ammunition and subsequently stormed the police station to demand the immediate release of the consignment,\u201d he alleged.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ziblim Yamusah, who made the accusations at a heavily- attended press conference in Gushegu, flanked by constituency executives, founding fathers and supporters of the party, insisted the party was not going to relent in its efforts to ensure that its members were not intimidated.<\/p>\n

He lamented that even though the area was in a state of emergency, activists of the NDC had been conducting acts of lawlessness with impunity, yet went unpunished with the claim that their government was in power.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson also mentioned that on April 7, 2011, residents woke up to ceaseless gunfire, which was being executed under the pretext of the performance of the funeral rites of the late in-law of the NDC constituency chairman, Alhaji Mahama Jamoni. This was at a time when the ban on carrying firearms was still in force.<\/p>\n

\u201cCross checks with the police, who at the time expressed their frustration at their inability to enforce the ban because the ceaseless gun firing was at the express wish of the NDC chairman,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mr. Yamusah described as false claims that NPP members were responsible for the unfortunate political violence in Gushegu, and wondered why the government could take sides by arresting only one faction since it took two to tango.<\/p>\n

He stated that in spite of provocations, hostilities and political harassment, the NPP had cautioned its supporters to restrain themselves. He called on the DCE, government and the national security to focus their investigative process beyond political lenses to unearth the truth underlying the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident, in the hope that justice would eventually be served.<\/p>\n

The DCE, Fuseini Alhassan, later in interview with Daily Guide, denied all the allegations levelled against him and said his accusers were being haunted by their own acts and deeds. He stated that realizing that peace and unity was important for the execution of the Better Ghana Agenda, all stakeholders including the NPP were involved in the security in the district.<\/p>\n

Mr Alhassan however issued a stern warning to residents whose intentions were to derail the fragile peace, to be wary as the security would deal with them according to law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
