A TIPPER truck loaded with gravels has crushed to death a third-year physician assistant student of the Central University College and a kenkey seller at Afienya junction, a Dawhenya suburb.<\/p>\n

Some yet-to-be-identified persons also sustained injuries.<\/p>\n

The student, a female, was identified as Leslie Bentum.<\/p>\n

According to some supposed eyewitnesses, the Tuesday night incident occurred around 9:30pm at a spot called Afienya Junction when the driver of the tipper truck with registration number GT 7036 U, lost control of the wheel after his brake failed him. In an attempt to halt the truck, the driver veered of the road, killing the student, a female, and an 18-year-old kenkey seller whose name was mentioned as Rita Adiki.<\/p>\n

The student had arrived at the junction in a white VW car with registration number AW 668 Y, in the company of a man believed to be a colleague, to buy kenkey from Adiki who is reported to be a Senior High Student, when the truck ran straight into them, killing the pair instantly and injuring the driver of the VW and a few other people who were at the spot to buy kenkey.<\/p>\n

The truck, after crushing the two, was reported to have run into a building and destroyed two rooms, after which it continued to a shop believed to be that of a seamstress\u2019s.<\/p>\n

The eyewitnesses said the causalities would have been more than the two if the occupants of the two rooms were indoors at the time of the incident. One of the supposed eyewitnesses said the Central University student\u2019s body was cut into two.<\/p>\n

She alleged that the incident was so gory that most of them could not stay to watch as there was blood all over the place. According to the eyewitnesses, the police from Prampram later arrived at the scene and retrieved the bodies of the deceased from the scene and towed the truck away from the spot to their station in Prampram.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Daniel Ansong-Dankyi, the Tema Regional Commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU), confirmed the accident when DAILY GUIDE contacted him on phone. He remarked that he heard about the accident on Tuesday night and by the time he arrived at the scene, both the deceased and the injured had all been moved from the spot.<\/p>\n

He said he later got the tipper truck towed from the wreckage so as to avoid traffic congestion on the part of the road where the accident occurred.<\/p>\n

Earlier on, authorities at Central University had declined to speak about the accident to Daily Guide when it visited its Dawhenya Campus to ascertain the truth about the death of their student in the accident. They confirmed that one of their third-year female students had died in the accident after a tipper truck crushed her when she went to buy kenkey around the Afienya Junction.<\/p>\n

Residents of the area where the accident occurred later told Daily Guide that most of the tipper drivers used the Afienya Junction road in order to avoid paying tolls on the Afienya-Tema road.<\/p>\n

They were of the view that the death of the two ladies would not have occurred if the driver of the tipper truck had driven straight to Tema without using the Afienya Junction road. They appealed to authorities, especially the MTTU, to ensure that any driver found doing that was brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others who might continue to engage in such bad practices.<\/p>\n

Unconfirmed reports say the tipper truck driver absconded from the scene shortly after the accident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
