World number one Lee Westwood double bogeyed his final hole to finish six shots behind pacesetter Damien McGrane after day one of the Ballantine’s Championship in Korea.<\/p>\n

Westwood, who started at the 10th, had made good progress up the leaderboard with birdies at 18, 4 and 5 taking him to three-under.<\/span><\/p>\n

But he bogeyed the seventh and then took a six at the 425-yar par four ninth to give all three birdies back and end the day outside the top 30.<\/span><\/p>\n

Westwood stayed positive though despite his late slips. “I’m still in contention,” said the English star. “On the first 15 holes I played very nicely and gave myself a lot of chances without really making any putts.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Day one honours belonged to Ireland’s McGrane, who fired a six-under 66 at the par 72 Blackstone GC in Seoul.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 40-year-old from Meath, whose only other European Tour win came in the Far East when he overcame appalling weather to win the 2008 Volvo China Open, carded eight birdies and two bogeys.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I made plenty of birdies and I putted nicely,” he said. “I holed everything inside 15 feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I still think there are a lot of birdie chances out there and scoring will be quite low this week. The fairways are generous and, just like last week the China Open, where he finished joint 22nd, you make birdies on day one and keep going till the end of the tournament.”<\/span><\/p>\n

McGrane leads by one from England’s Richard Finch, South Korean Park Sang-hyun and Chile’s Felipe Aguilar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finch, 33, went bogey free in his bid to win a fourth European Tour title while Park’s only error was a bogey six at 15. Aguilar raced to five-under through 10 holes but could only par in as he tried to match McGrane.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finch said later: “It’s a tough golf course and I somehow managed to keep bogeys off the card, which was nice.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This course has a lot of elevation changes and slopes. Even the greens have some huge slopes and ridges in them.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I just tried to make it a real key to get it on the fairway in the first place and try to get on the correct level with my approach shot. If you’re on the correct level, you’re not too far away and should have a good chance at birdie.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Struggle<\/span><\/h4>\n

Round one was a struggle for most of the big names taking part, although American Dustin Johnson could be happy with his day’s work.<\/span><\/p>\n

The four-time PGA Tour winner – making his first appearance in Asia – shot a two-under 70 but playing partner Ernie Els had to settle for a one-over 73.<\/span><\/p>\n

The South African birdied 14 and 16 to wipe out two front nine bogeys but another bogey at 17 after he found trouble off the tee meant he finished over par for the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

England’s Ian Poulter got off to a nightmare start as he carded double bogey sixes at his first two holes, the 10th and 11th. He repaired some of the damage with a birdie at 14 and an eagle at the par five first but a bogey followed at the second and he eventually signed for a 74.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hopes that YE Yang – Asia’s only major winner – would put on a big show in front of his home Korean fans quickly evaporated<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2009 PGA Championship winner started with a bogey six, was out in 37 and made a hat-trick of bogeys from the 11th on his way to a four-over 76 that puts him in big danger of missing the cut.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
