The 2010 Sports Personality of the Year will be known next Friday with household names leading the list of players setting sights on the Sh13 million prize, Toyota GX 100.<\/p>\n

Netballer Mwanaidi Hassan, who won last season’s award, is in the race for the second year running, but this time around she is likely to face a stiff competition. Some of the prominent players she will compete with include: basketball player Hasheem Thabeet (Houston Rockets) and Shadrack Nsajigwa, Mrisho Ngassa, Khamis Mcha, and Juma Kaseja, all footballers.<\/p>\n

Athletics will be represented by the likes of Samson Ramadhan, Marco Joseph, John Bazil, Zakia Mrisho, Mary Naali and Magdalena Mushi.In boxing, middleweight fighter Francis Cheka stands a big chance to land the gong following his feat in the International Circuit Boxing (ICB), Universal Boxing Organisation (UBO) and World Boxing Commission (WBC) championships.<\/p>\n

The World Boxing Federation middleweight champion, Karama Nyilawila and UBO bantamweight champion Mbwana Matumla are also favourites to win.Golfers, who are hunting for the prize include: Frank Roman, Adam Abbas and Isaac Anania while Kevin Peter, Mbwana Ally, Ibrahim Christopher, Hellen Richard Mwegoha, Yasinta Remmy and Zainabu Thabit, will also be looking to climb on the podium. In basketball, George Otto Tarimo, Lusajo Samwel Mwakipunda, Gilbert Batungi, Faraja Malaki, Zakhia Kondo and Doritha Mbunda, who sparkled during the RBA League, are eying the prize.<\/p>\n

Women footballers eligible for the prize include: Asha Rashid, Mwanahamisi Omary and Fatuma Omary while cyclists Hamis Clement, Richard Laizer and Said Jumanne are also in the list.This time around, the awards will also involve the local players plying their trade abroad whose list includes: Thabeet, Henry Joseph, Rogers Mtagwa and Nizar Khalfan.<\/p>\n
