The ruling National Democratic Congress government has rubbished a new survey on political attitudes, which claims that the flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will win the Presidency if elections were held today.<\/p>\n

Released by polling body Synovate, the result was based on a sample size of 1,000 respondents and put the NPP flagbearer ahead of President John Atta Mills in the known swing regions of the country.<\/p>\n

The figures in the opinion poll show Nana Addo will comfortably win the Western, Central, Brong Ahafo and Eastern regions if polls were held today.<\/p>\n

However, a Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has described the entire document as \u201cbogus\u201d. Speaking in an interview with Citi News, he said the polls were not based on any credible and scientific findings and urged the public to ignore it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you go to page ten of the poll you will find a pie chart and even JHS and SHS students know that pie charts are supposed to give you a tally of hundred percent (100%). So if you look at page ten, the swing regions, Greater Accra 43% for President Mills, 47% for Nana Addo, 8% Paa Kwesi Nduom and 3% for Edward Mahama, if you add all you get 101%. Clearly this is a joke\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo quite clearly what you have here is some voodoo statistics that someone put together. In any case which statistician who knows basic statistics would use household methodology for such a poll? You go and you poll individually; if you use household methodology you will get it wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Publisher of the New Statesman newspaper, Asare Otchere-Darko, which published details of the opinion poll, said the government is making a mountain out of a molehill.<\/p>\n

Synovate has also defended its findings in the poll released this month, saying appropriate methodology was used in conducting the polls. Mr. William Mensah, a Senior Research Officer at Synovate said the total sum of 101% could have simply been an error which does not directly affect the results in any way.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tried to round things up and if we get 101% that could be an error and it doesn\u2019t really affect the results. Who says it is not representative? You need to have a sample frame and the sampling frame was the 2000 population and housing census. We could not use the 2010 one because that result was provisional\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
