ONE OF the victims who sustained severe injuries following two separate explosions at the smelting section of Western Steel and Forgings Limited in Tema, and were admitted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, is reported dead.<\/p>\n

The deceased, whose identity is yet to be known, according to information reaching Daily Guide, passed away yesterday at the Accra medical facility where he was rushed to a few hours after the incident occurred.<\/p>\n

He was reported to have earlier been sent to the Tema General Hospital with another colleague who also sustained severe injuries but was later rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, upon the advice of medics at the Tema hospital.<\/p>\n

Efforts by Daily Guide to contact management of the steel company to confirm the death of their worker proved futile as a security man at the entrance of the company explained to the reporters that he was acting on a directive from above.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working upon directive from above and the person who can talk to you has traveled to Accra,\u201d the security man and his colleague stated.<\/p>\n

A security man, who contacted someone on phone, perhaps a member of the management, later left his office for the administration and returned afterward to tell Daily Guide that the company had spoken to a section of the media and was not ready to talk to anyone.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, one of the security men, who refused to mention his name, said management and personnel from the Ghana Police and Fire Service were locked up in a meeting about the incident and could only talk after the meeting.<\/p>\n

According to him, there were plans by the company to have some of the victims at the Narh-Bita Hospital transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra since their conditions were deteriorating.<\/p>\n

When DAILY GUIDE later visited the hospital in Tema, one of the victims was reported to have been discharged, with five others still on admission. Two others, who are believed to be in critical condition, according to information gathered by DAILY GUIDE at the medical facility, seemed to confirm the comment of the security. The two, according to the information, would soon be transferred to the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for further examination and treatment.<\/p>\n

The industrial practices of the company could be described as unwelcoming and detrimental to the health of the workers who operate in the dangerous furnace.<\/p>\n

A few metres from the security check at the company\u2019s main entrance is a safety precaution notice, and surprisingly, no worker, at the time of Daily Guide\u2019s visit, was seen wearing any safety clothing as displayed on the notice board.<\/p>\n

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson, when contacted, noted that she was unaware of any visit by any personnel from the regional command to the steel company.<\/p>\n

Speaking to this paper, Abraham Koomson, General Secretary of the Ghana Federation of Labour, expressed shock at the attitude of the management of the company towards DAILY GUIDE and added that the leadership of his outfit and other stakeholders were planning to hold talks with the Minister of Employment and Social Welfare to discuss the failure of the Factories Inspectorate Division of the ministry to undertake regular inspections to ensure that employers safeguarded the safety of their employees at their various factories.<\/p>\n

Mr. Koomson told DAILY GUIDE that he had information about the death of one of the victims admitted at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. He added that the news of the death of the victim was yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
