Bongani Khumalo’s loan spell at Preston North End has come to an end after the Bafana Bafana central defender had surgery on his injured foot on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 24-year-old picked up the injury during Preston’s 4-0 defeat to Millwall in the Championship on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Preston have now been relegated to League One and Khumalo has been ruled out for the rest of the season.<\/p>\n

He will now aim to return in time for South Africa’s crucial African Nations Cup qualifier with Egypt in June.<\/p>\n

Bafana Bafana will qualify for the tournament in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in 2012 with victory in Cairo.<\/p>\n

“He’ll be fine – it may take a bit of time to get back to full fitness after an operation but it’s not too serious,” his agent Glyn Binkin told BBC Sport.<\/p>\n

“He definitely won’t play again this season but the experience of playing at Preston has been great for his game.”<\/p>\n

Khumalo will recuperate at his parent club, Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League.<\/p>\n

The former SuperSport United captain joined Preston in March and made six appearances, winning two and losing two.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
