GOVERNORS Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo, Aliyu Babangida of Niger, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Theodore<\/p>\n

Orji of Abia and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State had an early lead in the gubernatorial election conducted on Tuesday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).<\/p>\n

Mr Abdulfatah Ahmed, gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State and Senator Ibikunle Amosun of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ogun State also recorded early lead in the election in their respective states.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the result announced yesterday in some polling units in Ikeja area of Lagos State, Fashola, the candidate of the ACN, defeated other candidates. At Sunday Adigun Street,\u00a0 ACN polled 303, PDP polled 34, LP had 3, while CPC, NCP and ANPP had 1 apiece.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0 the result of Kadiri Street Ward 05, ACN had 136, while PDP polled 71 votes. Similarly at Ward 06 on Kadiri Street, ACN had 113 votes to PDP\u2019s 44.<\/p>\n

In Delta,\u00a0 Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan had a good showing at Jeremi Ward 2 Unit 4 where the PDP had 264 votes, DPP 84, while the ACN had 7 votes.<\/p>\n

As of the time of going to the press, Governor Alao-Akala was said to be leading comfortably in 16 local governments while former Governor Rashidi Ladoja\u2019s Accord Party was leading in Ona Ara, Lagelu, Afijio, Egbeda, Ibadan North-East and Oluyole local government areas. The ACN candidate, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, was said to be leading in Ibadan South-West, Ibadan North-West, Iseyin, Kajola, Oyo West, Oyo East and Atiba local government areas.<\/p>\n

In Ogun State, the ACN candidate, Senator Amosun, was reported to be ahead of other candidates, especially in Ogun Central.<\/p>\n

In Rivers State, Governor Rotimi Amaechi has maintained an early lead from the results trickling in from Port Harcourt.<\/p>\n

Though the results, as of 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday indicated that units, wards and local government areas have all been dominated by Governor Amaechi.<\/p>\n

According to some of the results, the PDP had 50,353 in Tai Local Government Area, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had 57 votes and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), 102 votes.<\/p>\n

In Okrika Ward 4, the constituency of the ACN candidate, Abiye Sekibo, the PDP polled 1,238 votes and the ACN, 1,204 votes.<\/p>\n

50 arrested with 850,000 thumbprinted ballot papers in Oyo.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, about 50 people were arrested in Oyo State by military personnel for various electoral offences during the re-scheduled governorship and House of Assembly election on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Nigerian Tribune learnt that on the eve of the election, 31 people were arrested at Olomi in Oluyole Local Government Area of the state with already thumbprinted, unspecified number of ballot papers in 18 vehicles.<\/p>\n

Another set of people was arrested at Iseyin allegedly with about 850,000 thumbprinted ballot papers.<\/p>\n

He added that there was a\u00a0 report that voter cards were allegedly imported from Lagos State, adding that the allegation would be investigated by the command.<\/p>\n

The suspects, numbering about 20, were brought to the police headquarters, Eleyele, around 12 noon in a commercial Toyota bus with registration number XN 616 AGL (Lagos).<\/p>\n

They were immediately taken to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Iyaganku, for further investigation.<\/p>\n

A military source told the Nigerian Tribune that another 30 suspected electoral offenders were arrested in Ibadan with various handsets and charms.<\/p>\n

The source said that they had been handed over to the state police command for further investigation.<\/p>\n

Also, at Ali Iwo area of Ibadan, two people were arrested for illegally thumbprinting ballot papers in a house in the area.<\/p>\n

Nigerian Tribune further gathered that some politicians were arrested in Ibadan, the state capital for various alleged electoral malpractices.<\/p>\n

When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Hashim Argungu, confirmed the arrest of some people, both at Iseyin and Olomi by the military personnel.<\/p>\n

He said the command would investigate the claim that some of the thumbprinted ballot papers were \u2018imported\u2019 from Lagos State.<\/p>\n

Again, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, was thrown into confusion on Tuesday, when bomb blasts occurred around Ummarari and London Chiki wards of the state.<\/p>\n

Eyewitnesses told the Nigerian Tribune that the bomb blasts which occurred around Lakebarto company where building materials were being sold on Tashan Baga in Ummarari ward and also Gawo Mai Namba, in London Chiki ward of Maiduguri metropolis, did not claim any life but uprooted a tree.<\/p>\n

One of the victims, a driver, who\u00a0 gave his name as Auwalu Adamu, said he was conveying officials of the INEC and election materials to their various polling units, when his vehicle matched on a bomb buried in a pothole by the roadside at Gawo Mai Namba, and it exploded, but no one was injured except that his tyre got burst.<\/p>\n

Confirming the two incidents on phone to newsmen, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mike Zuokumor, said two bomb blasts occurred at Gawo Mai Namba and Baga road, but no casualty was recorded.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Maiduguri and its environs witnessed a poor turnout, as people did not come out to vote for candidates of their choice. Some of them were said to be aggrieved with the outcome of the presidential election.<\/p>\n

Nigerian Tribune also learnt that the multiple bomb explosions that had engulfed Maiduguri affected the gubernatorial election, as people were scared of coming out to vote, though some who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune said the gubernatorial election did not mean much to them.<\/p>\n

Others said they came out to vote a candidate that would bring change to the state, adding that they were not scared of the bomb explosions.<\/p>\n

According to them, the security of life and property was in God\u2019s hands and the police, who were protecting the life of citizens, had also assured the people of adequate security.<\/p>\n

In another development, bomb explosions rocked Ogbe-Ijoh, headquarters of Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, on Tuesday, during the gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections.<\/p>\n

Three bomb explosions were first recorded at about 1.00 a.m at the jetty, close to the council headquarters, backed with a staccato of shots from machine guns.<\/p>\n

Nigerian Tribune gathered that when election materials were to be distributed, another explosion boomed at about 8.30 a.m. but there were no casualties.<\/p>\n

A highly-placed security source disclosed that another high calibre bomb programmed with cell phone was discovered at about 200 metres away from the council headquarters, which served as the distribution centre for the local government, but was detonated by the bomb disposal unit of the Nigeria Police.<\/p>\n

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Charles Muka, confirmed the incidents.<\/p>\n

In the state, election was generally peaceful, with massive turnout of voters bouyed by the presence of heavy security mounted by fierce-looking soldiers, mobile policemen and other paramilitary personnel.<\/p>\n

The gubernatorial candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), Chief Great Ogboru, who voted at about 12.20 p.m at Abraka Secondary School, described the exercise as peaceful, but for some complaints of usage of photocopy result sheets.<\/p>\n

His rival, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), voted at 12.35 p.m at Abigborodo Ward 6, Unit 1, in Warri North Local Government Area of the state.<\/p>\n

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, he said he was optimistic that he would emerge victorious in the election, adding that \u201cI\u2019m very sure of victory, no doubt about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He commended the INEC for improved performance and promised the people of the state better and more dividends of democracy<\/p>\n

Nigerian Tribune gathered that a gunman, who allegedly snatched electoral materials meant for voting at Ekete and other areas in Udu Local Government Area of the state, was beaten up by angry electorate and recovered the materials at Orhuwhorun area.<\/p>\n

It was learnt that the intervention of the police saved the man from being lynched to death.<\/p>\n

There was also disturbance at some polling units in Mosogar in Ethiope East Local Government Area, while a crew of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba, which was covering the election, was attacked on the East-West Road, at Uwheru, Ughelli area of the state, with the windscreen of its vehicle destroyed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
