The American public first fell in love with a regional British accent when Beatlemania – and the Fab Four\u2019s Liverpudlian accents – enraptured them back in the Sixties.<\/p>\n

Now, it appears, the U.S. television public are set to fall for a regional British tilt once more.<\/p>\n

With singer turned TV star Cheryl Cole, 27, set to be confirmed as a judge on the U.S. edition of the X Factor, it has been revealed Miss Cole\u2019s distinctive Geordie twang has been one of the contributory factors in helping her secure the high-profile position.<\/p>\n

It had been claimed that Miss Cole \u2013 who was born in Newcastle and grew up on council estates in the Walker and Heaton areas of the city\u00a0 – would have to soften her accent for the launch of the U.S. show, with some reports even claiming she would need elocution lessons.<\/p>\n

Now though, the Daily Mail has learned that – far from being a negative – Miss Cole\u2019s accent has helped secure her the hugely prestigious and financially rewarding role alongside Simon Cowell in America.<\/p>\n

A close friend of Miss Cole\u2019s told the Daily Mail: \u2018Cheryl\u2019s not going to change her accent and they don\u2019t want her to. The Americans want her to have her accent.\u2019<\/p>\n

Indeed, those close to Miss Cole have cited the U.S. public\u2019s love of The Beatles\u2019 Scouse accents in the 1960s as examples of U.S. attitudes to regional differences.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Americans have always been fan of the different British accents. They love them,\u2019 the friend continued. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Miss Cole, who divorced England international footballer Ashley Cole last year, has proved reluctant to alter her language in the past, often saying: \u2018aye\u2019 instead of \u2018yes\u2019 and \u2018us\u2019 instead of \u2018me\u2019.<\/p>\n

The star is due to be formally announced as a judge on the U.S. version of the hugely-popular series next week.<\/p>\n

She will be paid \u00a31.5million for the series and will join the likes of Cowell, Piers Morgan, Cat Deeley, Martin Bashir and former BBC business journalist Richard Quest who have made the move Stateside. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Cowell \u2013 the show\u2019s creator \u2013 told yesterday how American TV executives had already been won over by Miss Cole.<\/p>\n

All but confirming Miss Cole in the role, he said: \u2018Mike Darnell and Peter Rice Fox TV executives will tell you they wanted her all the time.<\/p>\n

\u2018I showed a tape to Mike Darnell two years ago of a clip I\u2019d shot in England of Cheryl and he said there and then, \u201cI\u2019d hire her now for American Idol.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018They absolutely fell in love with her… they were desperate for her.\u2019<\/p>\n

Cowell had only met Miss Cole once before he recruited her for the British version of the X Factor in 2008.<\/p>\n

However, he told how he had immediately been won over.<\/p>\n

\u2018I never think about it as an American or British audience. This girl is special. She\u2019s just got a great ability to communicate. She\u2019s a great judge. She\u2019s smart. It\u2019s just a hunch.<\/p>\n

\u2018If people take to her like the British public did, I think she\u2019s going to do really well in America. And Fox was desperate to hire her.\u2019<\/p>\n

Cowell and Miss Cole are due to be joined by producer LA Reid, 54.<\/p>\n

There is also a \u2018good chance\u2019 Eighties star Paula Abdul, 48, will be a judge on the programme, which hits the U.S. in the autumn.\u00a0<\/p>\n
