Twiga Juniors cricketers started the inaugural Regional U-17 tournament impressively after recording a nine-wicket rout of Moro Stars in the opening match played at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) venue in Morogoro on Friday.

Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) has organized the four-day event in an effort to promote the sport among local youth and identify players for national youth teams of different age categories.

Kassim Nassor, who is one of the tournament’s co-ordinators, said the two sides had to play 10 overs respectively instead of the scheduled 20 because of heavy downpour that pounded the region earlier in the morning.

“A heavy downpour forced us to delay the start of the tournament and we were eventually forced to reduce the number of overs to ensure the match was played,” said Nassor, who is also the senior national cricket team player.

The losers, who are one of two sides representing the hosts, opted to start batting and managed paltry 25 runs for the loss of three wickets in 10 overs, with shaky batting becoming their biggest weakness.

They struggled with batting throughout the 10 overs, dropping wickets at regular intervals and in the end, presented their opponents with the easiest task of wrapping up the win.

Twiga Juniors’ bowling tenacity also played part in the demolition of their opponents in which, the former’s bowlers deployed their variety of tricks to haul wickets.

Twiga Juniors, on reply, hardly drained a sweat during the chase as they reached the target for the loss of one wicket in mere four overs.

Moro Stars’ failure to fully utilize the home ground advantage meant they were therefore required to step up performance in the remaining matches should they stay within reach of the silverware.

Uluguru Stars are the hosts’ other representative in the tournament, which has also attracted two other squads of Dar Eleven and Arusha Kilimeru.

According to the event’s fixture, two other matches were expected to take place at the same venue later in the afternoon yesterday in which Uluguru Stars faced Twiga Juniors while Dar Eleven played Arusha Kilimeru shortly thereafter.

Three more matches were on the cards yesterday as Dar Eleven and Moro Stars locked horns in the first game in the morning, to be followed by the match between Arusha Kilimeru and Uluguru Stars.

Dar es Salaam outfits of Dar Eleven and Twiga Juniors were then scheduled to clash in the third match of the day later in the afternoon.
