<\/a>Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, has called for the expansion and modification of the criteria used in the\u00a0 selection\u00a0 of awardees\u00a0 at the National Farmers\u2019 Day celebration to enable many more\u00a0 farmers and fishermen to benefit from the awards.<\/p>\nHe said to encourage many more people particularly the youth to go into farming,\u00a0 it\u00a0 was imperative\u00a0 to expand the awards to include both commercial and subsistence farming .<\/p>\n
Osabarima Kwesi Atta made the call on Wednesday when the 67\u00a0 National Farmers\u2019 Day Award winners paid a courtesy call on him in Cape Coast as part of activities marking the celebration\u00a0 which is scheduled to take place on Friday at Agona Nsaba in the\u00a0 Central Region.<\/p>\n
The day is being celebrated under the theme \u201cGrow more food: Research for Agricultural Development\u201d.<\/p>\n
He chief commended the planning committee for the good work done and appealed to the awardees not to relent in their efforts or be complacent with the awards but rather to let it motivate them to do more.<\/p>\n
He also urged them not to concentrate on subsistence farming alone but to venture into commercial farming as well and to seek\u00a0 modern farming methods to enhance their farming activities.<\/p>\n
The Regional Director\u00a0 of Food and Agriculture, Mr George Yeboah who led the delegation, thanked the Omanhene for the warm reception and said the nation recognized the tremendous efforts of famers and fishermen in the socio-economic development\u00a0 of the country\u00a0 and\u00a0 as a result it\u00a0 was necessary to crown their efforts with the awards.<\/p>\n
In a related development, the awardees were hosted to a cocktail party on Wednesday night by the Central Regional Minister; Mrs Ama Benyiwa Doe at the residency in Cape Coast where they were treated to music provided by the Cape Coast Fire Angles band .<\/p>\n
Mrs Benyiwa Doe expressed her happiness for the farmers and fishermen who had taken it upon themselves to feed the nation, stressing that without their efforts the economy stood the risk of collapse as far as food security was concerned.<\/p>\n
She said she was happy that this year\u2019s awardees included the youth and commended them for their efforts, adding that gone were the days when farming was attributed to the aged.<\/p>\n
The award winners visited the Cape Coast Castle and the Kakum National\u00a0 Park.<\/p>\n
