MOBILE health services are not new to Zambia’s health service delivery system.<\/p>\n

“In Southern Province and indeed in other provinces of Zambia, mobile outreach services such as mobile eye clinic services, mobile anti-retroviral therapy services, maternal and child care outreaches as well as mobile counselling and testing among others have been in use for a very long time,” President Rupiah Banda said this in Mazabuka last Tuesday when he handed over mobile health units toSouthern Province.<\/p>\n

While some sections of society have been bent on criticising the Government on the introduction of mobile health facilities, the fact is that many Zambians are happy with such services which are aimed at bringing quality health care closer to the people.<\/p>\n

It is a well-known fact that there are no specialised health facilities in rural and remotest areas of Zambia hence people in such localities have to travel longer distances in search of health facilities.<\/p>\n

That is why President Rupiah Banda commissioned the mobile health units in Southern Province on Tuesday to improve people’s access to health facilities in Zambia.<\/p>\n

Each of the mobile units consists of outpatient unit, x-ray unit,theatre unit, laboratory unit, dispensary and audio visual unit, power and water unit as well as living quarters unit for medical staff.<\/p>\n

The units, which will be available in all nine provinces of Zambia are designed for rough landscapes and they are meant to penetrate hard-to-reach places in remotest parts of the country.<\/p>\n

Chief Simamba of Siavonga District said the introduction of mobile health units in Southern Province and Zambia at large was a good development.<\/p>\n

The traditional leader said the mobile health units would serve their intended purpose of taking the health care to people in rural and far-flung areas.<\/p>\n

He however noted that the poor road network in Siavonga might affect the operations of the mobile health units.<\/p>\n

Chief Simamba said it would be better if the roads were worked on before introducing the mobile health units to Siavonga.<\/p>\n

Chief Mukuni of Kazungula District said the mobile health units were welcome and well-meaning as the units would reduce the suffering of his people who could not access better health facilities.<\/p>\n

Chief Momba of Kazungula said the mobile health units were necessary in many rural settings of the country.<\/p>\n

He would be happy to see the units visit his chiefdom because his area was far away from permanent hospitals.<\/p>\n

And speaking when he handed over the mobile health units to Southern Province in Mazabuka on Tuesday, President Banda reiterated the Government’s commitment to improving the lives of Zambians.<\/p>\n

He urged Southern Province residents and Zambians in general to take good care of all mobile health units and safeguard them.<\/p>\n

“I expect to see timely and competent maintenance and servicing of these mobile health units and the equipment therein. May I thank all our stakeholders and cooperating partners for their continued support in the provision of health care services to our people. We can never thank you enough,” Mr Banda said.<\/p>\n

He was, however, saddened that some sections of society were criticising the mobile health hospital concept when these are meant to uplift the welfare of the Zambian people who have in some cases been living without access to basic health care.<\/p>\n

“Nothing will deter my Government from looking after the welfare of poor people in terms of providing health facilities. Sometimes some sections of society are happy when citizens have no jobs and other medical facilities,” he said.<\/p>\n

Several health posts and hospitals are currently being constructed in all the nine provinces of Zambia.<\/p>\n

In Southern Province, the Government is constructing a new general hospital in Choma near where the old one is sitiated while in Namwala another district hospital is also under construction.<\/p>\n

The president said more hospitals would be constructed in Southern Province saying the Government had budgeted to construct Gwembe and Kazungula District hospitals.<\/p>\n

Mr Banda said the Government is also in the process of upgrading and constructing new hospitals in the Southern Province.<\/p>\n

He said with the commissioning of the mobile units, most remote areas of the province would now be reached by health personnel.<\/p>\n

Mr Banda said the Government had also acquired the state of art ambulances in form of boats for use in locations where people depended on water transport.<\/p>\n

Southern Province was the fourth to receive the mobile health units after Central, Copperbelt and Lusaka provinces.<\/p>\n

Mr Banda said Mazabuka had seen a significant increase in industrial activities such as mining, sugar production, steel production and commercial farming among others, resulting in a higher population hence the need to upgrade the current district hospital to a level of a general hospital.<\/p>\n

“Our ultimate goal as Government is to see that each citizen of Zambia enjoys good health and each contributing to the development of the nation by freely expressing their potential without fear of hunger and disease,” he said.<\/p>\n

Zambia should embrace the mobile health concept because it is a sureway of reaching all categories of people in the country.<\/p>\n
