While that was an 11% increase from February&#8217;s revised record low of 270.000, new home sales remained near the lowest levels ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to March of last year, the annual rate was down a staggering 21.9%.<\/p>\n<p>Economists surveyed by Briefing.com were expecting a sales rate of 280,000 in March.<\/p>\n<p>The report followed on the heels of slightly encouraging reports on <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/04\/20\/news\/economy\/existing_home_sales\/index.htm\">existing home sales<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/04\/19\/news\/economy\/housing_starts_building_permits\/index.htm\">new home construction and permits<\/a> last week. Economists cautioned that one decent month of data doesn&#8217;t mean the housing market has turned around.<\/p>\n<p>Housing supply still far outweighs supply, as foreclosed properties continue to flood the market. And while both prices and mortgage rates are at attractive lows, demand for mortgages remains weak.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday will bring the latest <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2011\/03\/29\/real_estate\/January_home_prices\/index.htm\">S&#038;P\/Case-Shiller home price index<\/a>.
