Abuja \u2014 A major rift appears to have broken out between the leadership of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and some members of the party in the South-east over its performance at the presidential election.<\/p>\n

The members, who claimed to be the bona-fide chairmen of the CPC in the South-eastern states of Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo addressed a press conference in Awka, Anambra State, disagreeing with the party’s stand that the presidential poll was not free and fair.<\/p>\n

One of the party chairmen, Mr. Chuba Ikeagwu, presented a communiqu\u00e9 where the group disowned the allegation by the CPC leadership that the presidential election results were manipulated in the South-east.<\/p>\n

He said the party should rather blame itself for allowing intra-party wrangling and dispute to rob it of any electoral success in the zone.<\/p>\n

However, CPC has dismissed the action of the group, describing the members as spoilers.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary of CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashekin, the party said its attention had been drawn to the “nefarious activities of some miscreants that masqueraded as chairmen of the party in the South-eastern zone of the party”.<\/p>\n

It said the men were found unsuitable for continued membership of the party and had been expelled as far back as November last year for anti-party activities.<\/p>\n

Fashekin alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was master-minding what he called the insidious campaigns by the group as part of the residual war-chest earmarked to win the presidency.<\/p>\n

According to him, the plan had the twin agenda to “break the will of CPC in exposing the electoral heist that the presidential election was and also to incite unfounded disharmony among our members and supporters in the South-east”.<\/p>\n

“We are comforted by the facts that, our people, being very discerning, are able to see through the veil that no rational party member exhibits such demeanour except those induced negatively for such purpose.<\/p>\n

“We remain resolute in our resolve to stay the course of legal redress of this infernal rape of the democratic wishes of our people. Ours is a just cause and being on the side of truth and equity, we shall overcome,” he said.<\/p>\n

However, THISDAY gathered Sunday that Ikeagwu and his group had hit back at the leadership of the party, debunking the assertion that they were expelled from CPC.<\/p>\n

Ikeagwu said in a statement that they could not have been expelled from the party when they were the ones that functioned for the party during the presidential election.<\/p>\n

He also said some members of his group functioned as members of the CPC Presidential Campaign Council.<\/p>\n

Some of the members of the Presidential Campaign Council for South-east, according to him, included Mr. Ifeanyi Ozigbo and Mr. Peter Elema. In the statement, Ikeagwu maintained that CPC’s failure in the zone had nothing to do with electoral malpractice.<\/p>\n

“It has come to our knowledge that the national leadership of our party, the CPC, as a result of the press conference we granted at the party secretariat, Awka, aimed at putting the records straight with regards to the outcome of the just-concluded presidential election, is making frivolous claims that we were expelled members of the party.<\/p>\n

“This assertion by the party has further justified our claims that the failure of the party to impact positively at the just-concluded presidential election in the South-east was as a result of the internal wrangling. It would be of interest if the party leadership can explain to Nigerians when such expulsions took place; yet we were saddled with the responsibilities of prosecuting the election on behalf of the party in our zone by appointing us into various ad hoc committees for the election purposes.<\/p>\n

“We were expelled, yet we administered the party in our various states and brought the candidates that contested elections in the East on behalf of the CPC,” he said.<\/p>\n

He said CPC should own up to its abysmal performance at the just-concluded presidential election.<\/p>\n
