Nairobi \u2014 Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission wants an assistant minister and a parastatal chief charged with corruption and abuse of office.<\/p>\n

In its quarterly report covering January to March 2011, the commission accuses the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) chief executive, the company secretary and a senior legal officer at the parastatal of procuring cranes irregularly.<\/p>\n

The parastatal illegally bought the cranes, paying 40 per cent of the cost in advance, contrary to the law, the graft watchdog says, claiming also that before the tender award, the local agent of the winning firm sponsored three KPA officials for a trip to China.<\/p>\n

The State graft watchdog is also recommending the prosecution of an assistant minister for corruption surrounding the embezzlement of Sh7 million from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).<\/p>\n

“Investigations established that Sh1,690,000 that was withdrawn from the CDF account could be traced as deposits into the bank account of the MP,” Kacc alleges. The anti-corruption commission further alleges that it has established Sh5.6 million was owed by eight officials of the CDF committee in outstanding imprests “and that minutes of the committee were doctored and\/or manufactured to cover up for the misappropriated funds.”<\/p>\n

The commission also accuses the assistant minister and his wife of regularly drawing fuel from the supplier contracted by the fund committee.<\/p>\n

But the Attorney-General has returned the files to the anti-corruption agency for further investigations.<\/p>\n

The AG has directed the commission to go ahead and charge private developers, who allegedly acquired a public utility plot belonging to Kenya Airports Authority near Wilson Airport.<\/p>\n

According to the graft watchdog, the land was part of a road reserve, but had been hived off, illegally alienated and allocated to the private developers.<\/p>\n
