The Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria,His Eminenence, Dr. Sunday Ola-Makinde, has urged Nigerians to eschew violence as Nigeria goes to the last round of elections to elect state governors and representatives in the state houses of assembly.

He gave the advice in his Easter message on Sunday. The clergyman hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for giving the Independent National Electoral Commission chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, the requisite autonomy to conduct what had been adjudged by local and international observers as the freest and fairest poll in the last decade. The clergyman also gave kudos to the INEC boss for making credible electioneering process possible.

“We remember those people who were victims of various bombings that trailed several campaigns and those killed in the Suleja episode. They are all martyrs and we pray that God will grant them eternal peace and will be with their families,” he said.

He thanked Christians and Nigerians for recognizing the importance of the Lenten season and making the best use of it to fast and pray for a successful and largely peaceful election.

He encouraged Christians to celebrate the Easter season with love and to advocate peace even in the midst of chaos so that the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the the cross would not be in vain.

He said, “The only way to truly celebrate and show that his sacrifice, love and death on the cross is valued and appreciated is for us to live our lives for others.”

He however urged Christains and Nigerians in general not to give up in their prayers for the newly elected leaders to lead with the fear of God towards achieving God’s ordained purpose for Nigeria.
