Westwood: Five shots clear after successive 66s

Lee Westwood fired a second successive round of 66 to take a five-shot lead heading into the final round of the Indonesian Open.

The Englishman, who will return to the top of the world rankings if he wins on Sunday and Luke Donald fails to do the same at The Heritage in South Carolina, belatedly completed his second round with a closing birdie to lead by one after two rounds.

Third round leaderboard:

(GB & Ire unless stated)
-16 L Westwood
-11 T Chuayprakong (Tha)
-11 Hyun-bin Park (Kor)
-10 P Marksaeng (Tha)

He then started his third round with a hat-trick of birdies before giving one back at the fourth.

The former European No.1 picked up five more shots before finishing with a closing bogey at the final hole, leaving him on 16 under par.

“This course is one of the best courses in Asia and the greens were great after last night’s rain,” he said.

Westwood, who turns 38 on Sunday, credited his improved performance on the greens to a hot putter.

Comfortable

“It feels much better because every decent putt seems to go in and that made me more comfortable,” he said, after switching from a belly putter to a conventional version after the first round.

“I’ve been in this position before and I’ll try not to get ahead of myself.

Of the rest of his game, Westwood added: “I hit the ball really well and made some good putts. It was a shame to bogey the last and every time you drop a shot on the last you feel disappointed but a 66 is a good score.

“I like the golf course. It seems to be setting up nicely for me and I’ve been hitting it well. My iron play has been accurate and you can only have accurate iron play when you hit a lot of fairways.”

Thitiphun Chuayprakong of Thailand and Park Hyun-bin of South Korea head the chasing pack.
