Gerard Houllier<\/a> will not need surgery after being admitted to hospital on Wednesday night complaining of chest pains, his assistant Gary McAllister has revealed.<\/p>\nThe 63-year-old Frenchman is currently being kept under observation in a hospital in Birmingham, and there were fears he might require a repeat of the major heart surgery he had in 2001 when manager of Liverpool.<\/p>\n
However McAllister, who has taken charge of team affairs at Villa Park in Houllier\u2019s absence, has revealed after visiting his boss in hospital that such measures will not be required this time around.<\/p>\n
“I visited Gerard in hospital after training and was surprised how well he looked,\u201d the 46-year-old said in a press conference. \u201cIt was really surprising. If you took away all the stuff attached to his arms, he didn’t look ill.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was great and bubbly. He had a tough night but he was looking surprisingly well and in fine fettle.<\/p>\n
“They the specialists are definitely saying there is no surgery needed, which is a massive plus.<\/p>\n
“The last time there was major surgery. This time there will be no surgery needed, purely medicine and rest.”<\/p>\n
This recurrence of Houllier\u2019s health problems have raised questions as to whether Villa can cope in his absence, but McAllister is confident the experience of the Frenchman\u2019s backroom staff will ensure there is no lack of leadership.<\/p>\n
We’ve got plenty of resources here,” he added. “I’ve got Gordon Cowans first team coach and Rafa Gonzalez goalkeeping coach.<\/p>\n
“I can lean on Kevin MacDonald reserve team coach who has stepped into this position before as well Tony McAndrew youth team coach. There are plenty of people for me to lean on.”<\/p>\n
Their manager\u2019s health scare has come at the worst possible time for Villa, who are currently on a three match unbeaten run in the Premier League which has lifted them into the top half of the table.<\/p>\n
But McAllister, who was a player at Anfield when Houllier first succumbed to health issues, hopes his players will react in the same way as his Liverpool team-mates did to their manager\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was shock within the Liverpool dressing room and we knew there was a major problem with the length of the surgery and what it entailed. It was a big operation.<\/p>\n
“But Phil Thompson came in and that midweek we went to Kiev for a Champions League game and it was the first time Kiev had been beaten at home.<\/p>\n
“The players rallied and were playing for the manager and I’m sure that is what will happen here. A perfect tonic for the manager will be getting three points against Stoke.”<\/p>\n
