{"id":388896,"date":"2011-04-22T11:52:36","date_gmt":"2011-04-22T11:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/04\/22\/rylance-dazzles-broadway-critics\/"},"modified":"2011-04-22T11:52:36","modified_gmt":"2011-04-22T11:52:36","slug":"rylance-dazzles-broadway-critics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/04\/22\/rylance-dazzles-broadway-critics\/","title":{"rendered":"Rylance dazzles Broadway critics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"67.4821002387\"><span><span>22 April 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>07:52 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>British actor Mark Rylance has become the toast of Broadway after reprising his award-winning role in the London stage hit Jerusalem in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>According to the New York Times, his portrayal of a nonconformist living in rural England in Jez Butterworth&#8217;s play is &#8220;truly a performance for the ages&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Daily News agreed, saying the 51-year-old presents a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/music\/2011\/04\/22\/2011-04-22_jerusalem_review_mark_rylances_magnetic_performance_gets_it_right.html\">touching portrait of a magnetic maniac<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Jerusalem was first staged at London&#8217;s Royal Court theatre in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Rickson&#8217;s production &#8211; which also stars Mackenzie Crook from BBC sitcom The Office &#8211; moved to London&#8217;s Apollo theatre the following year.<\/p>\n<p>In the Daily Telegraph, critic Claire Prentice says Rylance is &#8220;manic and mesmerising&#8221; in his role as drug-dealing rogue Johnny &#8220;Rooster&#8221; Byron.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though some of the nuances and cultural references get lost in the translation, the power of Rylance&#8217;s performance and Butterworth&#8217;s poetic script are undiminished&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The mind-set of its characters is definitely British provincial,&#8221; wrote Ben Brantley in the <a href=\"http:\/\/theater.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/22\/theater\/reviews\/jerusalem-with-mark-rylance-review.html\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yet the New York production &#8211; which retains half its original British cast and has been revised for clarity of cultural references &#8211; turns out to be rousingly accessible on these shores.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rylance&#8217;s deliciously subversive performance triggers both barrels of Butterworth&#8217;s funny if disconcerting play,&#8221; wrote Variety&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/review\/VE1117945063?refcatid=33&#038;printerfriendly=true\">Marilyn Stasio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Strutting and staggering around in garish shirts and gypsy jewellery&#8230; he gives beaucoup charisma to the earthy party animal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jerusalem had its official opening night on Thursday and is scheduled to run at New York&#8217;s Music Box theatre until 24 July.<\/p>\n<p>The theatre previously played host to Rylance&#8217;s previous Broadway appearance in satirical comedy La Bete, which also came to New York following a successful London run.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>See the original post here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/entertainment-arts-13168419\" title=\"Rylance dazzles Broadway critics\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rylance dazzles Broadway critics<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 22 April 2011 Last updated at 07:52 ET British actor Mark Rylance has become the toast of Broadway after reprising his award-winning role in the London stage hit Jerusalem in Manhattan.
