An Abuja magistrate yesterday sentenced a 26-year-old business man to two months\u2019 imprisonment for attempting to defraud a commercial bank of N2.5 million.<\/p>\n
He was however given an option of N2,000 fine.<\/p>\n
Mohammed Shaibu Bashiru of Abidjan Street, Zone 3, Wuse, Abuja, was convicted for attempting to commit an offence, which is punishable under Section 98 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Abdullahi Adamu stated in court that on April 19, one Emmanuel Ayagba, Chief Security Officer of UBA, Wuse Zone 3, reported to the police that the accused came to the bank with a UBA savings account passbook belonging to one Ibrahim Mohammed and attempted to withdraw N2.5m before he was arrested in the process.<\/p>\n
He said that the accused confessed to the crime during police investigations.<\/p>\n
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and pleaded for leniency.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Aminu Eri convicted him of the crime.<\/p>\n
In another case on Wednesday, a commercial driver was arraigned for allegedly absconding with a car entrusted to him for commercial purposes by one Emmanuel Obuah.<\/p>\n
Tunde Alliu of Suleja, in Niger State was charged with criminal breach of trust and theft, offences contrary to Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Simon Ibrahim stated in court that on April 18, the complainant, Emmanuel Obuah reported at Utako Police Station that sometime in November 2010, he entrusted his car with registration number XF 938 RBC to the accused with an agreement that he will deliver N17,500 to him at the end of every week.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor said the accused absconded with the car to an unknown destination since January this year before his arrest, adding that during police investigations, it was discovered that the accused changed the original colour of the car and converted it to his personal use.<\/p>\n
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and requested for bail, which was not opposed by the prosecutor.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Musa I. Jobbo granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with a reliable surety in like sum, who must reside within the court\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/p>\n
The case was adjourned to May 9 for hearing.<\/p>\n
